Hi guys, just joined. I am from Germany and looking for a project RE5. I have some bikes but the RE5 seems to be pretty bad when it comes to spare parts. Found this one link but its missing the plastic cover. Is that repairable? According to the seller engine turns with no fluids in it. What do you think? Cheers Hans

The instrument cover is available as an AfterMarket item (AM). Even if it wasn't missing you'd probably need to replace it. The originals are easily sun damaged. I'm not familiar with prices in the EU so can't comment. The best thing about this bike is it looks complete with original equipment. Anything can be repaired and there are a number of AM parts available. For example, a replacement instrument clear screen is now available as well as the green cover. Member TYP110 is in Belgium and very familiar with the RE5. He may be able to comment on the bike's value. Price aside, I would say this looks like a good a project. By the look of the fuel tank cap it's also a very early model. Nice to have. Used parts are available from the USA. Send an email to Jess at rotaryrecycle.com He has just about everything from the original bike and a few aftermarket parts. Member T140V (Stuart in the UK) makes a number of AM parts for the bike, see this thread and there are some very experienced spanner men in the UK as well. Member TYP110 (Michel) in Belgium is our EU engine rebuilder so you've got a wealth of knowledge virtually at your door. Let us know when you've bought something and we look forward to progress reports.

Engine tuns with no fluid? This could be a simple as a corroded radiator or as serious as a cracked chamber or failed housing seals . It sure looks a early bike with solid front mudguard stays . Sold oil lines and early front brakes with locating lugs for the pipes. And as Wayne said the rare petrol filler cap If it was local to me, I would certainly take a look.

Hans,
I know this bike, it belonged to me before I sold it 7 years ago. Since then it has been changing owners for a few times and the price has tripled. It has been for sale on ebay for a few years now.
In my humble opinion the price they are asking now is too much. This bike needs so much attention and ofcourse money....If the engine is not running you are taking a huge gamble.
It is better to spent a little more and buy a running bike!
Cheers,
Michel

Hi Michel and all, thanks for that, I let pass this one. The idea of buying a RE5 is new for me and I tend to rush...

Can one get me an estimate of how much a typical overhaul would be, please? From what I have learned having to restore the case after the seals have rubbed on the surface due to lack of lubrication is the most expensive one?!

Hi Zebulon,
I do know of a RE5 owner in Ulm who is considering selling his bike.
If you message me, I can let you have his details.

This is in reference to an engine rebuild only (proper unit): I can only give you prices from Australia but it should put you in the ballpark. A rebuild by our man over here is around $2,000. Under the tab "Restore and Repair" > "Restoration" you'll find contact details for rebuilders in AU, EU, NZ and UK. The last time I saw NOS engines for sale they were going for around $3000 US and I know of one that sold for $3800 AU.

Meanwhile I got my 3D-printer busy to have something to look at.

Haha, brilliant! I don't know much about 3D printers. Is this something like a stock program to download and run on the printer?

Some websites allow you to download "STL-files" that will run on your printer. One popular site is thingiverse.com. You can search for anything of interest.
