I have no spark at the plug, the CDI unit does whine as it is supposed to, have incoming power there. Points gap is good. No power at ignition coil.I checked continuity from CDI to Coil. If there is a problem with CDI box,can someone supply an after market alternative?
My bike is the RE5A 1976, but it has 2 sets of points, as it seems to be set up like the M with speed relay etc.
Can anyone help ...thanks?

Normally helps to let people know where in the world you are. There may be someone local who can help...

Britty. As Andy said "Let people know where you are" There maybe another owner near to you who can help by plugging cdi into there bike before you start hunting down wires.

I have used CDI boxes that I warrenty for 90 days. I also have the ability to test your box. You will need to send it to me.
You may use the personal message feature on the board to contact me if you wish.
Best,

Hi sorry about that......l'm in ontario Canada. If I were you, I'd be sending my box down to Jess. That's as good an offer as you're going to get. At the very least he can test it and you can either eliminate it or replace it if necessary.

It's usually just the diodes that are u/s inside the unit. Pennies to fix, I've repaired a couple on the past.

In addition to the diode upgrade, I found a few CDI units giving out plenty of volts at the SCR (the whine is due to the inverter bit of the CDI stepping 12 volts up to 300 ish volts). Duplicating the points action didn't dump the 300 or so volts to the coil, SCR not triggering. In all the CDI units I found the second in of the two small PNP transistors (below T1) had shorted out, replacing this has got the CDI units back to working as they should. There is a circuit diagram for the RE5 CDI unit on the web, try www.nwlink.com/~paulcl/re5/images/tech/t_cdi1.gif and www.nwlink.com/~paulcl/re5/images/tech/t_cdi3.gif also www.nwlink.com/~paulcl/re5/images/tech/t_cdi3.gif hope this helps, and many thanks to the chap who hand drew the diagrams.

Sparkrite SX4000 could be a reasonable replacement, I've seen this, and a coil on flea bay for less than £40.

The links to the circuit diagrams do not seem to work. I am interested in finding out which two PNP transistors need changing. Can anyone help. Thanks.

Sorry the links no longer work. I'm not an electrics guy so haven't read all the CDI posts. However, the diodes are a common problem and typically replaced. Try reading this detailed post about repairing the CDI. It talks about the diodes: re5rotary.proboards.com/thread/2442/cdi-repair-alternatives

Thanks Wayne. I am gathering lots of info now, and diode replacement will be the first job.
