No Re5 discussion would be complete without an oil thread. Since Tim was complaining that it seems awful quiet in here (I agree)... How about we go for the old standby... What kind of oil do you use in your Re5?... and why? Sump? Metering Tank? Trans? All right guys... let her rip... no personal attacks... no kicking-shoving-biting.... (This should be good for at LEAST 10 pages) Best, Jess

Castrol 20w-50....in all three. Nearly 100% recommended by those I polled when I bought the bike, besides Sam recommended it too. So, good enough for him, good enough for me.

Castrol 20w-50 in all 3 for me as well, probably the same for everybody else. Guess that ends this discussion... I think the crickets should start chirping again any second now.

I haven't even changed the oil yet in the RE5 so I can't say much. The person I bought it from had just changed it before I got it.

In the trans currently is Motul 2-stroke tranny lube..... In the injection tank is Castrol 20-50.... In the past I have used Castrol 20-50 in all three locations.

In the trans currently is Motul 2-stroke tranny lube..... In the injection tank is Castrol 20-50.... In the past I have used Castrol 20-50 in all three locations. Why did you change? First let me say I did use Castrol in all three locations for many years and I know many folks still do and it works very well. I suspect most high quality oils will work just fine. I switched to motul in the sump because I wanted a very high quality syn in the sump. The temps can and do get very high in this engine and syn has a better performance at high temps. I remember going on a ride several years ago at the national VJMC meet at Oak Ridge and getting caught in a traffic jam. It was 90+ degrees outside and the engine was certainly very hot! It gives me a peace of mind to have the syn in the sump. I have for a very long time used either motul or Honda 2-stroke tranny lube in all my 2-stroke bikes. I have used it in GT550s, GT750s and the RE5s. The tranny in the RE5 is essentially a GT750 tranny. It just makes sense to me that a gearbox should use a gear oil. I have a couple friends that use 90wt gear oil in their trannys and it works well also. Quite often whenever Castrol is discussed for use in the tranny someone will say they have a problem with clutch slip. They claim the new fuel saving formulas cause the clutch slip. I never had this problem. I use syn ATF in my W2000. This was recommended on the German site and it made a big difference in shifting quality and clutch action on the W2000. Remember the W2000 box is from KTM and many dirt bike like ATF, I also use it in my Zundapp box. Finally the injection tank...I currently still use Castrol. It was recommended because of its low ash formulation. I guess it is still low ash, it was at one time but oil formulations change often. I know others use 2-stroke syn injection oil and it works for them. As a point of interest, in the W2000 owners manual it says that you can use 2-stroke injection oil as long as it is syn. Some W2000 owners in Germany have switched to Mobil 1 in their premix and it works for them. About 10 years ago a group of German W2000 owners decided to take an endurance ride. They rode a single W2000(premix model) about 2257 kilo in 20 hours. They used Mobil 1 in that bike. They averaged 111kph for the trip. Never had a problem with the bike. I think most high quality oils would work just fine...pick they one that makes you feel the best...oil is certainly a passionate subject...

Oh oh now thats interesting cause i was told by a few persons and shown in the official RE5 book that Suzuki recommend Shell Rotella 10/40w diesel oil for the injection tank and sump. This oil was used for its very high detergent properities and the fact the pressure delivery system is around 100psi. The gearbox itself used a traditional 10/40 to 20/50 motor oil.

Just checking because Sam said I had the latest updates. If you can come up with this it would be helpful. No offense, but maybe someone is confusing their "Shells". If you have newer info, please post.

I'll have to ask Fred to send me a print of the book page.

Maybe what is named in the bulletin is what Rotella has become (evolved to) now? ?

Yes Tim and so thats now what Freds telling me, heres his reply..
Allan. A Suzuki service bulletin from 1975 recommends Shell Super X 10w-20w-50 Motor oil. Another bulletin from Sept 75 added Mobil Super motor oil 10w-40 to the list. None of these are around any more, so the Rotella 15/40 was a dealer's closest guess in modern available products. I would suggest a phone call to Sam Costanzo may be in order to clear it up.

I believe I can answer the question...
While I would never presume to speak for Sam... I know the answer to this one...
Castrol GTX 20W-50 in the sump, trans and metering tank.
Sam buys it in 55gallon drums...
I have been to mecca and seen for myself ;D
Best,
Jess

And now we are back to the debate again cause over at Sundial they are cringing at people using stuff like GTX 20/50 in the Buffalos gearbox. I'll go over there and stir things up some more,,LOL
