Beautiful work that you have done REBM! Are your B-points connected? I see the B-point breaker in the timing housing but cannot see the wire leading to it. (I looked carefully because my A-model has no B-points and I am thinking of reactivating them. That is a big project for the A model because of it lacking the speed sensor. But I can dream!) The wire of the B-points is removed or cut off. At the moment I don't have in mind to use the B-points

When I purchased the RE5, I noticed that the right exhaust was re-welded on the manifold side and that the bottom was repaired with muffler repair putty. After removing the putty from the right muffler it looked like this, pretty bad. The left one appeared to be solid
Because I couldn't find a better one, I decided to bring both to the chrome plating company first only for dechroming. The right muffler was even worse as expected. The left only had a small rust hole just before the spark arrestor Because I still couldn't find a better right muffler, I tried to repair it Both mufflers before going to the chrome plating shop
The left muffler turned out great but after grinding and nickle plating of the right muffler some other weak spots appeared
I'm still doubting to repair the muffler but I can't find a better example (I have found a left one and I purchased it as a spare, you never know). Maybe any one of you can help with a right muffler?

Here is a post and repair method. I have a similar pipe crack at the front of the first photo. I do not believe the rest of the pipe is badly rusted.

Mine didn't had a cracked inner pipe, only the outer skin has rusted through from the inside

As I mentioned above the ring around the clutch basket was broken. After disassembly of the clutch basket the ring could be rewelded The ring is now TIG welded to all the holes, so when it breaks again it doesn't pops off. Hopefully this doesn't create to much unbalance. Also the headlamp bucket and the radiator grill needed some plastic welding on the usual spots. The headlamp bucket is made from polyethylene, this also explains why the paint is first coming off from this part. The grill is ABS just like the side covers Repaired grill

Inspiring work REBM. I have created two new posts in "RESTORATION" to help owners locate this type of work/repair and both have been credited with thanks to you.
We really appreciate this type of input.
As for the headlight shell, the peeling paint is so typical. My shell is in the paint shop at the moment as after ~22 years the restorative paint job I had done is starting to peel.
Thank you.

This board with all the topics was also very helpful for me to get started with the restoration project. And I probably need your help & advice in the future with some things. To get a better adhesion to the plastic parts, I have bead blasted them together with the fuel tank before I send it off to the paint shop.

The next job is cleaning and repairing of all the wiring en electrical components
Disassembly of the switches. Casings need to be bead blasted and painted again
Horn will be replaced because it is to rusty for rechroming Disassembly of the instrument panel Housing of the ventilator motor will be blasted and painted again (Electrical) parts underneath the gas tank Cleaned and repaired parts Wiring loom with new cable sleeve, tape and wire nuts. All wires and contacts have been cleaned More parts for cleaning and repairing CDI unit removed and opened
Air box and intake boot removed from the frame Some more pictures after cleaning and repairing CDI unit cleaned and ready for paint +freshly zinc plated parts. The CDI unit was working so I didn't replaced any electrical parts on the PCB jet. Should I replace some things in advance? That was all the cleaning and repairing of the electrical. Some components are still missing hardware which needs to be zinc plated. I also cleaned all small rubber parts.

I am most interested in your remanufacturing/restoration as your pictures and descriptions are amazing. Your question of... CDI unit cleaned and ready for paint +freshly zinc plated parts. The CDI unit was working so I didn't replaced any electrical parts on the PCB jet. Should I replace some things in advance?
I think you have about covered it; I will leave that question to others more knowing. My experience of early CDI failures are increased by the burnt or open resistor in the cap, a bad coil wire end, you addressed and overcharging voltage of the voltage regulator.
A board member here makes a new convex flat screen for the instrument cluster, pop up shields are available.

That's nice to hear. I always loved restoration topics from other people restoring their bikes

Some engine casings have been bead blasted Brake calipers have been disassembled for bead blasting. The previous owners fitted new rubber seals, piston and pads. Pads will be replaced for asbestos free ones. Disassembled speedo pickup
Radiator removed. The core is clogged and corroded through. Also the upper and lower part are spots corroded through. I went to radiator wizard of the country with it but he advised to search for a better one. Bead blasted chassis parts

Gorgeous pictures. I've just finished a light "freshen up" of my RE5M front end (bike was restored 20+ years ago). At one point, I held that speedo drive and wondered "what to do with this?" before reinstalling it as is. After seeing these pics, I know what to aim for next ground up.
I'm going to make this thread a sticky REBM, the pictures are gorgeous and the work inspirational. I'm also going to link to the FB group so they can have a look.
Keep them coming!

A small up date for today.
Other parts have been picked up from the chrome plating shop. Overall parts turned out very nice.
Anodized covers for the instrument panel. I first sanded off the old anodizing and pitting in the lathe.
Rebuilt rear shocks Finished winkers with new chrome and scratches on the lenses are sanded/polished out. The screws of the lenses will be replaced by JIS screws later on
