Hello RE5 drivers, here is my story about the repair of a right exhaust pipe. Since the flange was probably torn off by vibration (hard to believe) and the previous owner lubricated the air intake with metal paste to prevent the exhaust gases from escaping through the air intake, a little tinkering was called for. I turned a matching ring out of steel and then welded it in, see pictures. Since the hot exhaust gases in the defective exhaust are in direct contact with the outer wall of the exhaust, it has turned blue in the front area and can no longer be polished away. The repair worked and again a small step further, so that the motorcycle (Name=Felix!) will soon be on the road. Greetings from Germany Tillyy

I had the same happen to my right side exhaust and my exhaust shop managed to weld it. It failed a little lower than yours and thus they didnt need to put a ring in as there was enough metal left to reconnect.

Me Too. A relatively early pipe also on the right side. Yours, a very nice collar ring repair.

Last year I had the same failure. the heart breaker was the pipe had just been re-chromed. I had to ride it home about 60 miles and shut it off every time I had to stop to try and avoid bluing the chrome. It did cause a little blue color just behind the flange but most of it polished away and is barely noticeable. I was able to wiggle the inner pipe back into place and reach inside with a tiny dental size tig welding torch and weld it. I like the ring insert repair that Tillyy preformed being ahead of the weld, mine was about 1 3/4 inch from the flange. This was also on the right side and a very early frame number.
