Hi guys,
Have rode the bike in about 3 months and thought i would take it for a spin. As I warmed her up I noticed a foaming of the oil. First thought was water but then I drained the oil and the oil went back to its normal consistency.
I changed the oil filter and oil and its happening again. I took it for a drive to see if there is any power loss and its fine??
Any thoughts?

It sounds like you may have coolant mixing with the engine oil. I saw this happen some years ago when the clutch side large engine cover gasket was leaking between the cooling jacket and engine sump.

That might be possible. I let it run for about 40 mins and it seems the foam went away. I'm going to keep an eye on it. I might be possible it sat for a while and the water just built up in the sump? the only other interesting thing was that when i drained the old oil the foam went away in the pan.

When oil and water mix you usually get a Carmel milk shake . Could possible be moisture but you find water droplets at the top of filler when hot. The oil could be air ratting witch is not such a bad thing . Check to make sure the oil level is correct. Greg

As I re-read your post I realized I did not understand that you said the same oil that was foamy went back to its normal state. That is not what happens if you have coolant and oil mixing as it will turn into frothy milk shake as described above. You may have the oil level too high or perhaps you have air getting into the oil system somewhere. Do you have any oil leaks? I would look carefully at the large oil pickup tube cap below your oil filter, to make sure it is not cracked or if the tube itself may have a bad o-ring as it has one on it. I have seen a cracked cap from having too large an o-ring installed that caused the cap to bend and crack.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have a extremely light leak on the sump drain bolt (2 - 3 drops per a month) I will double check everything including the pickup tube cap. Aussiere5 can you describe air ratting and how does it occur in the Re5? Bad seal or something?

When you say you saw it foaming where were you looking at it to see it. Greg

Hey I looked through the oil fill hole as the bike was running. I also dropped the oil to get a better look at it and after about 10 or so minutes the foam just disappeared and oil went back to its normal consistency. I then replaced with fresh oil and oil filter and foam came back when I started the bike (again looking throw the oil fill hole). Then I went for a ride and let it sit there and run for about 30 - 40 minutes and the foam eventually went away and oil was ok.

Don't worry it's normal.
The oil is aironating (not sure of spelling), small air bubbles are formed in the oil on it's return to the sump, this subject has been covered before if you search.

Thank you so much! Good to hear its normal! I actually searched for foam on the forum before I posted but could not find anything

Well I've just done a search and I couldn't find it either, not as user friendly as I first thought.
Apologies Crusader, I remember it well though as I may have started the post with the same problem or at least participated in it.

just curious, are you running a detergent or non-detergent type motor oil?

I think the additives that some oil companies advertise to "reduce slugging" and will "keep your engine cleaner on the inside" will cause the oil to foam. If you're concerned you might want to try replacing the oil with a "non-detergent" oil. This will be specified on the outside of the bottle. I think Shell Rotella is a non-detergent oil but I haven't checked in a long time & this may have changed. Stick with the same viscosity you have been using
Cheers Bill

you are right lee we discussed this in depth last year foaming (frothing) is due to the fact the oil is stirred up by the gears moving and inturn this airates the oil and modern detergent oils are affected more than the older oils, this is quite normal regards mike
