Shell Rotella is a pretty high detergent oil as it is engineered to run in diesel engines. Diesels require quite a bit of detergent to keep the soot from the combustion of diesel in suspension in the oil. If the oil was non-detergent the oil passages in a diesel engine would plug with soot. It is very difficult to find non-detergent oils today. The re5 has a full flow oil filter and I would suggest you run a detergent oil. Non detergent oils are used primarily in compressors and lawn mower type engines that do not use an oil filter. With an oil filter you want contaminants to be suspended in the oil to allow the filter to remove them and also prevent sludge build up. You would be amazed at what and old fashioned non-filter type engine looks like inside after running non-detergent oil for a few years. The bottom of the crankcase or oil pan with have a thick buildup that looks like mud.
