Stuart,
The worst thing you can do to an re5 that has sat for years is just try to start it...
If you do not have a service manual, get one. Read it. The oiling system needs to be thouroughly checked before firing it up. If you are not sure about the oiling system, run premix as running the engine without proper oil will ruin it quickly.
I would pull the plug and squirt some oil through the spark plug hole, and rotate the engine by hand.
The relay you speak of is most probably the speed relay, it was later deleted on the A model so it will not cause your bike to not run.
Best of luck, use the search feature on the forum... there is a lot of information available.
Technical questions are best addressed via phone... as I type like crap ;D
We can cover a great deal of ground in a five minute phone call...
More likely than not, the carby will need attention.
Best Regards, and Welcome!

Thanks for the advice, the bike has been started and run up over the years but became more difficult to start untill it would not run at all, managed to get it running on tickover today after checking water and oil levels. Will make a bit of premix up and check the oil pump is working before running on neat petrol again.
Regards Stuart.

Not to be an alarmist, but...
One of the symptoms of compression loss is "getting harder to start" They will start and run on 60psi... however, the motor is a nifty rotary paperweight at 60 psi.
The first thing we do on EVERY bike that comes to the shop is run a compression and leakdown test... Period.
Good place to start.
Just my 2 cents...

I have to climb a very steep learning curve on this, one thing at a time, I'll check the oil metering pump is delivering then see if I can find a compression tester that fits the plug hole, have seen a graph somewhere showing about 123psi at the highest point is that about right if not what should it be. The engine seems to have plenty of compression when turned over with the kickstart and takes a long time to leak down. Regards Stuart.

Compression will need to be somewhere around that. The kickstarter is hard to use even on a boat anchor motor, it's just there to meet the requirements of the day.

This seems to be the best place to get help and advice. Checking everything isn't a bad thing. Because it runs OK I'm so tempted to take mine out but I have no idea when the oil or plug were last changed, what the brakes, tyres and shocks are like etc. Ho hum

Removed the carb to investigate rumours of damaged jets, found 2 with the heads damaged and needle for accelerator pump missing, now in a box ready for a transatlantic trip to RR for a make over.
With that a new air filter and plug adaptor may get it running on premix untill I prove the OMP.
