Having bought a sparkplug adaptor from Rotary Recycle (very pleased with it!) and using a sparkplug LMAR9E-J, this plug only lasted less than 200 miles. I fitted another plug at the side of the road and everything was ok. But then having visited another chap with an RE5 for the first time I noticed that the engine note on tickover was very different to mine. His was the blat-blat-blat sound, mine was always more revvy, even with the tickover still at 1200rpm. My mixture screw was wound out by about one and a half turns, the others chaps was wound out by about three turns, so when I got home I adjusted my screw out to approx three turns and then I got the same engine note on tickover. So I must assume that I was running it on a lean tickover mixture, which must have been detrimental to the plug. I've now covered about 400 miles since this adjustment with no issues. The bike has never really caused me any hesitation or running problems through the rev range after overhauling the carb, still running on a 87.5 main jet. When you've not listened to another bike it is difficult to measure what your's should be like.
The other thing I noticed, which stood out like a sore thumb, was this other guys bike had no clutch rattle, or any timing chain noise. My clutch rattled when I bought the bike, I changed the clutch plates and the springs and carefully examined everything else, with no excessive wear. The timing chain adjuster again was not rattly or with any evidence of wear. But what I would like to be able to achieve is a rattle free clutch, which I shall look at over the winter. Any ideas anybody?
Since owning the bike I checked the oil metering pump - 6cc's in 4 minutes at 2000 rpm and everything seems ok, I'm still running a pre-mix in the fuel tank at a ratio of 100 to 1 (just in case). I've been monitoring the oil consumption via the metering pump, working out fuel consumption and oil consumption, it works out at about 200 to 1. I generally ride 2 up in the 50-70mile an hour range, so under light throttle conditions, the amount of oil used via the pump is very very little indeed, so I feel happy using premix as well and this has caused no plug fouling problems. What does anybody else think?
My general fuel consumption 2 up is about 35miles per gallon.
