Behind the fuel petcock is a nipple that runs into the bottom of the fuel tank. This nipple is part of a tube that runs up into the tank and curves towards the middle over the central fuel tank hump. I can't see where it ends but somewhere near the very top of the tank just behind the fuel cap, I'd imagine.
The fuel petcock is connected to this nipple by a short rubber hose that makes a near 90 degree turn. Must be important, because unlike my two early models, my low mile A model has a metal tube inside this short rubber hose reinforcing it to keep it open.
Does anybody know what this tube does ? Does it bleed air out of the fuel petcock preventing an air lock ? I don't believe I've seen this fitting on other contemporary Suzukis.

Thanks Zach. Typical Suzuki then. They have perfectly good petcocks running on the GT750 and other models for years but redesign the whole thing for the RE5 for some reason known only to themselves. Thus the RE5 petcock remains unobtanium and you can still buy NOS GT750 stuff.
Thanks, Wayne

Wayne That's it exactly, a vent. Eh? All the bloody good it does ... The only way to get my petcock to work correctly is to run it on prime. Which leads me to a question: Is there a suitable (i.e. one that will fit on an RE tank) Suzuki or aftermarket petcock that is just on/off rather than vacuum-controlled as the OEM one is? RE's have a fuel light which is very effective at letting you know when you're (sort of) low on fuel, so in reality a 'reserve' setting is redundant, and the vacuum control isn't completely foolproof. A simple, non-vacuum petcock would be a much better solution IMO.

Very nice... Which adapter plate did you use to fit up to the RE's tank?
