Hi I'm looking at getting a lot of the bolts and Allen Screws re-plated (zinc or nickel). Has anyone here tried those Home Plating kits that are available and if so what sort of success & finish was achieved. Is it worth doing the work at home or better to get them professionally done? Ray

I purchased the Caswell Copy Cad kit. I tried making my own transformer/power supply. Initial results were OK at first. Some bots really came out like new, but larger pieces did not do as well. I believe its because of my poor transformer. I've just ordered their power supply today and expect more consistent results. My brother-in-law has the same kit and says his is working great. He has the right transformer.

I have the Eastwood zinc plating kit. Works fine, but I've had a hard time getting a smooth finish, the plating comes out rough. I've had polish the bolts first then plate, then sometimes polish the zinc. Takes a fair big of time.

Ive just had EVERY nut bold and washer re zinc'd for 2 re5 m's and it cost me £160 pounds, and that is a lot of fastners inc the large bits like axle's. Its not expensive but very time consuming to clean them, and they look like new. Is it really worth doing it yourself? Roy

I have done the nuts and bolts from two complete bikes at home only 'coz the platers sometimes lose bits. It's a bit hit and miss. The kits are really good for that screw or plate that you suddenly realised was forgotten when you sent your stuff away. Or for those bits you really don't want the plater to lose (as they have done).
As an aside, I'm surprised to find something actually cheaper here in OZ.......the zinc for two complete RE5's would cost you $99 here.

Yes, sending all of the bolts and nuts out at once would be nice. For me I just don't want to do this one all at once. I have too many projects that get taken apart and never make it back together. I'm doing an engine in-frame restoration/clean up.
Over the past weekend I received my new plating power supply and started in on the odd nut and bolt. I was pleased with the results and I'm getting better at it. Did the chain tensioner's and spacers from rear wheel. Yes its time consuming but I manage my time between plating cycles and things move along.
I'm also powder coating a lot of the parts. Just did inner rear fender, battery box, and swing arm. Cleaning up all the grease on the frame, plating the bolts, and I will start assembling.
