The title of my bike says 1977, I'm assuming that is the year that it first sold. The bike is an A model with the GT 750 style instruments, and black tank. The year of manufacture however is 4/75. frame # RE5 14925. Am I to assume that this is one of the bikes that had the pod instrument panel, round indicators, etc removed and replaced with A equipment before it was sold?

So you are saying between the M and A models there are no mechanical differences beyond the cosmetic items: indicators, tail lignt, head light and instrument panel?

The only mechanical difference was the B point set up.
It was on most, but not all, M models. My position is that it makes no discernable difference in how the bike runs... But there are people who do not share my opinion.
The short answer, is yes... The differences are purely cosmetic.
The were production changes along the way, but those are too numerous to list here.
Best,
