I am in the final stages of developing a part for production.
Over the years, I have found the BEST money I have spent on any antique motorcycle is some form of electronic ignition. On my 1970 Shovelhead ( HD) it was without question worth every cent to get rid of the points and fit a magnetic unit to the bike to trigger the coil. On my 1950 Series C Vincent Black Shadow it made the bike reliable and usable.
I have designed and am in the final stages of testing a unit that will replace the points, coil, and CDI unit for the Re5. By all outward appearance, it will look completely stock. It will be a complete plug and play kit that will not permanently modify the bike. It should take an average mechanic two hours to install. Since nothing will be cut/spliced or damaged in any way, the bike can be returned to stock in the same two hours.
With both points and CDI boxes becoming unobtainium, something has to be done if we are to keep riding and enjoying these bikes.
Benefits: no more points... increased spark energy, replaces CDI unit.
I also believe that the significantly increased spark energy will help dramatically with plug fouling issues. In my tests so far, the unit has performed well beyond my expectations.
It should be noted the system only replicates the A point system. I will again point out that the B points were determined to be redundant and removed by Suzuki during production.
I am convinced after 25 years of working with these bikes that the B points system is useless and in no way effects the performance/running of the bike. I am certain that some folks disagree. We will just have to agree to disagree...
It should also be noted that to produce this kit with the B points option would more than triple the cost of the kit and cause other problems due to availability of replacement and additionally needed speed relays and vacuum switches.
I anticipate that the turn key kit will sell for between 350.00 and 400.00.
I am looking for firm commitments to purchase the units to determine if it is worth the capital investment to go ahead and produce them.
You may post here, send an email to RR or send a PM through the forum. When I hit the magic number of people wanting the kit, I will place the order. If interest is high enough and rapid enough, I believe I can begin shipping the units in as little as 90 days.
As most of you are aware, Rotary Recycle is a hobby for me. Every part that I produce has to go through a cost benefit analysis before I can make a decision. I cannot afford to throw 15 grand at parts that will languish on the shelf.
I welcome any feedback, comments or criticism. As always, Rotary Recycle appreciates your support.
Best Regards,
Jess
