I have recently acquired two RE5's. I am a sucker for any unwanted motorcycle and the price was right (one tank of gas to Houston and back). I know nothing about the RE5 motorcycle, but doing some research on-line I stumbled on your forum so I joined, and guess I will be around for awhile. I got a photocopy of the service manual, and some old titles (1980 and 1988) but nothing current, so I will have to spend some time at my county courthouse to see if I can find current titles.
One is a 1975, VIN is RE 512310, it has about 15100 miles on it. The other is a 1976, VIN is RE 515712, it has 104 miles on it. Both are nearly complete, the '75 is just missing some trim pieces, the '76 is missing side panels, headlight, and some small pieces. I was told the '76 is a European model, and not legal in the States, but I have old Texas titles for both, so I don't know that is true. I also got one spare engine, and the engines on both will turn over with the kick start lever. It was suggested to use the '76 as a parts bike, but they both look like they would be restorable, and the pieces missing from one are for the most part also missing on the other one. So I am looking at both being projects unless someone tells me something I should know that will change my mind.
Is there anything I can tell about them from the VIN beyond what I know from the titles? The '75 is an orange color, and has the instrument pod with the tinted cover, the '76 is a dark, either blue or black and has just instruments, without the pod. I have pictures, but don't yet know how to post them on here.
