I have a 76 A model i got recently non running. Ive got the carburetor cleaned up and now have it running. It idles at about 1900-2000 rpm which seems a little high is this normal or what is the correct idle speed and how do i slow it down.

Back the adjusting screw off the one between the the 2 cables where they enter the carb cover, 1100-1200

You really need a service manual with an RE5.

The adjusting screw didnt seem to make any difference except when i screwed it all the way in the engine would die. Are there any other carb issues that would cause a high idle speed.

Turning the screw in all the way (between the 2 cables) would make it rev higher as it is a throttle stop screw. you realy need an angle gauge so you can set all the cables correctly use the following link to a service bulletin www.nwlink.com/~paulcl/re5/RE5bulletins.htmsteve

Thanks for the reply! Im sorry i turned the wrong screw i turned the pilot screw and not the throttle stop screw i will check it. I do have the angle guage and set the cables up according to the instructions when i replaced them. I will check it again. Should i be running a premix oil and gas until i get around to checking the oil pump if so how much oil to gas.
Thanks again for the reply! Sorry for my inexperience with these engines. I do have a repair manual and i am trying to learn.

certainly run premix if you are not certain of whether the metering oil pump works. You don't need much, if you use 1 ounce per gallon of gas you will be quite safe.
