Just returned to motorcycling after 30 years. I've purchased a RE5, nearly bought one brand new in 1976! but got sidetracked!!
Have been following the forum for some time now, and I've purchased one or two bits from Rotary Recycle.
Anybody wishing to get together, I'm based in the East Midlands.
In regards to a message about oxygenating of fuel, in Leicestershire you can still purchase 4 star leaded petol. I wonder if the oxygenation level is the same for unleaded?

Welcome RE5Guy.
There are a small number of RE5 owners lurking about on this forum who post regularly, don't know if any are local to you though?
Anyway tell us what you have, anything interesting, any photos?

Message to re5guy,
I am also based in the East Midlands, on the Notts/Derby border near to Eastwood.
Not sure if this is your bike, but one of my work colleagues at Rolls-Royce came into my office today to say he had seen a red RE5 parked up at Ambergate yesterday afternoon (Sunday).
He knows that I am currently restoring my M model RE5 and he showed me some images of the bike that he had taken using his mobile.
The bike was a red M model on a `P` or `R` reg plate. He said that he managed to have a chat with the bikes owner who stated the bike originates from the Loughborough area.
Could this be your bike by any chance?
I rode through Ambergate myself yesterday on my way into Matlock Bath, really disappointed that I did not see the RE5 myself as I have yet to see one one the road!
Regards, Mick J

Yes, that was me at Ambergate! Thanks for all the replies, I will ride and attend the Stafford show.
My bike however is totally unrestored. I've had the bike 3 months and have covered a 1000 miles up to now. When I purchased the RE5 M. I was more interested in the general running condition ie transmission, engine etc. Over the winter I'll strip it down and start to bring it up to a condition which I'm happy with. The bike however does run extremely well, very small hesitation at 2800 - 3000 rpm, but you can drive through this quite easily. No engine oil is used to speak of, I'm using oil into the petrol tank just as a security measure and keeping a close eye on the metering system. I have recently changed the check valve on the carb and will continue to monitor this oil consumption.
A friend of mine which rode a Yamaha 400cc 2stroke, had a problem where the metering pump was full on and it smoked like a battleship. After stopping at a set of traffic lights, a police car pulled up alongside and a police officer wound down the window and shouted "YOU CAN GET THAT BUGGER SORTED!!!" and as soon as he got home he set to work on rectifying the problem. Now let's be honest, that's the sort of reply and statement that you really require from a good policeman.
Look forward to meeting up and having a laugh with the other owners of the RE5's.
RE5Guy
