Though I'd introduce myself, (and ask a couple of stupid questions too.)
The Names Didge, or Daryl, born 1956, London, England, now living in Taunton, Somerset where I have my own Tattoo business and am the local VJMC co coordinator. (hello Lee)
I have a few bikes and have just bought a '76A RE5 (from Launceston in Cornwall) after hankering after one for decades. My mate who built and rode his own CBX top fuel drag bike is doing the mechanical work, and I, as a ex paint sprayer, am doing the, you guessed it, paintwork.
My 2 stupid questions are........... If I paint it firemist blue, should the 2 thin tank stripes be silver ? and......... The fuel tank flap, gloss or silk finish ?
That's it from me for now, I'm sure I'll think of something else that I SHOULD probably know, but till then..............

Thanks for that Steve, that's what I thought but all the pictures on the www of blue A's are a bit non descript as far as stripes are concerned. Cheers.

An A model with the GT750 style clocks on should be black, M model with roll clocks are firemist blue or firemist red/orange,

Didge is right there was the option of blue according to the manual with the same A model thin pin stiping though I can't recall ever seeing one, maybe they never happened?

Hi Didge, welcome to the board.Don,t know if youve already seen it but if you click on WWW.SUZUKICYCLES.ORG and click All Suzuki Models, scroll down to RE5Rotary and click Brochure scans there,s a blue RE5A model pictured there.Cheers,Shaun. Also good side-shot of one in model history.,which you can click on to enlarge slightly.

I would gamble on yes, as the M models finished and the bikes were all being changed to A models Suzuki could have continued spraying the paint set in the firemist blue and just changed the tank striping. Changing colour would have been another added cost and I don't think Suzuki would have wanted to go down that road with the money they were losing at the time.

Apparently,( but bear in mind I'm new at this RE5 stuff so I'm happy to be told I'm wrong,) the 1976 A model was offered in either Black or Firemist blue, the same blue as the previous years model, (as you all know,) but what I'm struggling with is if I were to do it in FM Blue, what colour were the stripes to be, silver or gold ? The bike was imported for spares so has no UK history and has been sprayed using aerosol cans with DIY stripes which leaves it as something of a blank canvas for me. I like the firemist colours, they scream RE5, and all the A's I've ever seen were black, (which does look nice admittedly.) I just thought it'll make a nice change, if Suzuki had done it at the factory for that year, what's stopping me ? If it hadn't been an option for the year I wouldn't dream of doing it, I like the FM orange, but 'cos it's not an M I wouldn't do it, it would be wrong.

Gonna, jump right in with my 2 cents... My opinion is that while they may have "talked" about a blue A model... I don't think the factory ever did it. I have never seen one... By the time the A model was out Suzuki was running for cover on the Re5 project. They were slashing costs as fast as they could. If you look at the finish on later parts... the quality was definately going down. Remember, Suzuki was losing $37,500 on EACH unit Firemist was an expensive, time consuming paint... Silver base, metal flake and then translucent top coat... Black was easy, and quick. They did experiment with different stripes for the Black tank... One day I will try to post some to the board. I think they are pretty cool. There were many prototypes and show models made in different colors... So my attitude is paint the thing whatever color makes you happy. I just did one in white metal flake and I have gotten boatloads of compliments... (suzuki made a couple display bikes to entice police departments to use the Re5 in white) My official position is that for purposes of production... Firemist red and blue for M, Black for A. Best, Jess
