Just read the article in the latest (May 2010) publication of Classic Bike including the comments from Lee (Doxey), Dave (Cameron), Mick (Taylor) & a quote from Jess of Rotary Recycle.
A few contacts quoted in it, most of which are well known I think, but still useful.
Worth reading.

Yes I bought a copy today, yes bought, even though I gave up some of my precious time and information gathered over the years to the article I didn't even get a complementary copy of the magazine, can you believe it? Anyway a good article that should enlighten the misinformed about the RE5 myths and also introduce to it the many who didn't know Suzuki marketed a rotary engined motorcycle. Some good links that we all know, gotta laugh at the Suzuki Simon link as he only has 4 items listed on his site for the RE5. ;D Lee.

Read the article... Found one Quote of particular interest... "There are no experts in the trade to turn to, so you have to become quite self reliant. You have to become the expert yourself." Well... I am kind of feeling a bit unappreciated... Hmmm? Best, Jess

Errrrrrrr, well I said that actually, well almost that, slight misquote from the writer. In the telephone conversation I had with the writer I said that you have to become an expert yourself because there is no one to turn to should you have a problem with your RE5, it's no good going to the nearest Suzuki dealer because chances are they have never even seen one. Now with that statement I meant locally, I also said there are fellow RE5 owners that you can contact on the Internet and they are always willing to help, and yes Jess you did get a mention, how can one talk RE5s without mentioning Rotary Recycle? Lee.

No worries mate... I knew what you meant. ;D I have actually had Suzuki Dealers tell me Suzuki never made my bike and it was a home built that I put Suzuki badges on I couldn't pass on the chance to give you a bit of grief though... (can't help myself) The fellow who wrote it asked for info... which I provided. I asked for a phone call as it takes me 20 times longer to type something than it does to say it, but he had a deadline issue. Seemed like a decent article. The author said he would send a copy of the magazine ( I'm not holding my breath, cause I'm afraid I'll turn blue) Best, Jess Thanks for the hug Tom...

Just picked up my copy of May's Classic Bike magazine, don't know if any else has noticed the picture of the RE5 on page 104 - look closely where the kickstart should be. The bike pictured has no kickstart but a black plastic cover over the shaft. The end of the cover is embossed with the Suzuki `S` logo. If i remember correctly the first RE5s shipped out to the dealers without a kickstart fitted, and relied solely upon the electric starter. I believe that the dealers in the US asked for the bikes to be supplied with both manual and electric methods of starting.

Hi Mick and welcome,
Good observation as I hadn't noticed that and I believe you are correct regarding the kick start issue, think it was something to do with the government highway dept or whatever the U.S. term is that asked Suzuki to fit kick starts but I am surprised to see it on a U.K. bike as we had the RE5 a little later on. Anyone remember them coming without a kick start in the U.K.?
I'm sure these photos are library photos and not recent ones.
Z.

Hello and thanks for the welcome!
Agree that the pictures are most probably library ones. Assume the bike in the photos is a UK model has it has the flatter handlebars. The backgrounds to the pictures looks like the UK. (in my humble opinion).
The bike is certainly an early model has it has the chrome `solid` oil cooler lines which were later replace by the flexi type.
Assume the pictures where taken in 1974/75 as the bike is fitted with a front number plate.
I can remember when the law in the UK changed (1975?) and it was no longer compulsory to have a front number plate fitted. I can remember me and my mates removing our front numbers plates the day BEFORE the law came into force just to show what rebellious teenagers we were!!!
