Hey guys. I bought a1976 RE5A that hasn’t started in 14 years. I followed the first start thread and also cleaned the carb after setting timing and spark. On Friday I got it to start!!! It only ran 20 seconds but I was really happy. Today I got it to idle on choke only with a lot of white smoke odd but mostly out of left pipe. I read a few threads on the choke issue and will follow some of the advice. Prestone seems to be circulating and temp guage works also oil pressure light turns off. Sprag clutch seemed to free itself and no more slipping. My concern is the smoke but engine is smooth. Spark plug has a bit of oil on it but less than first start. Is there any tests I can do to see why it’s smoking? I sent a video to the original owners son. He was happy and impressed as he thought the bike was junk. He informed me his dad had entered into hospice care last week. Sort of makes me want to ride it this summer even more… Thanks Phil

First of all, congratulations. Secondly, it's not unusual for them to smoke like crazy after a long lay up. They can make your front yard disappear in a fog of white. As you know, oil is injected into the float bowl and it's an oily mix that gets into the combustion chamber. After sitting for a long time, any residual oil can seep past seals and end up in the bottom chamber. It can take quite a bit of running to clear the system. Given you've hardly had any running time, I wouldn't worry. This is almost certainly completely normal.
If it doesn't clear after you've got it running reliably and for a reasonable amount of time, there are other things we can look at.

Congratulations as well.
Agree, the engine may have been oil flogged when last run. Gas is also very likely to smoke as the exhaust heat oxidizes
residuals in the pipes, too. Coolant is circulating, great.
A fan is required for running in the garage as the bikes put out a lot of heat.
Additional observations are welcome.

Great news Phil! And yes as others have said, the smoke is not a bad sign. After many years of sitting on the side stand most of the oil dripping out of the engine will go to the left pipe. When I start my bike after it sitting for a year it will emit great clouds of smoke out of the left pipe for a good five minutes.
That engine is fairly indestructible during long resting periods unless there is a coolant leak which can happen but is pretty rare.
Good luck!

Thanks guys certainly reassuring I’ve always loved these bikes and I still can’t believe I own one. It doesn’t look like much but it’s a survivor. Motivated because of all of you!!

Good evening guys So I ordered an O ring and a float needle seat gasket from Suzuki and installed them. I started it and the smoke is gone! Happy about that. Let it run outside for about 10 minutes and got an idle on about 1/4 choke but no idle off choke. It’s running much better than last time. I’ve tried adjusting the mixture screw but it’s hard to do while it’s on choke. I’ve tested the choke uploader and it holds vacuum but the O ring is worn should get that next week I pulled it inside on it’s own power. Clutch is good. Working on gas tank it’s a mess. Pinholes in top of tank that I’m soldering. Inside really rusted. Overall I’m satisfied but I’m sure I can do better by adjusting the cables and stuff. Thanks for taking the time Phil

Thanks for taking the time Phil Phil, I have found that it doesn't take very much to clog the primary fuel jet #32 here. If the fuel tank isn't spotless you may have to clean the jet several times. 1/2 to 1 turn out, 1 turn being too rich. drive.google.com/file/d/0B2v7musDaPbLNUFKcUdaTm5SOGs/edit?resourcekey=0-WZKcXa1kEroCzyl9qB3bSQTim

Tim I’m running an auxiliary tank and I’ve taken that jet out a few times but I’ll check it again. I’m out way more on that air screw so I’ll adjust that Thanks Phil

One thing the factory lists as a concern is the #40 actual pilot jet needle becoming stuck down. Just a thought. Tim

Good evening gentlemen, So I pulled the carburetor and paid close attention to the fuel needle It seems to move in and out via the adjustment screw. I have another carburetor but a cast inlet model and I noticed the needle sticks out more than the one off my bike. I started looking at it closer and the needle is off center which I probably wouldn’t have noticed if not for the other carburetor where it’s dead center. I know I fought trying to get it together though. Still waiting on parts from Suzuki. Would you guys let it soak in something like CRC cold parts cleaner or something similar as no more carb cleaner other than aerosol in my country. I did clean it with carb cleaner and air as I don’t have an ultrasonic cleaner. Thanks Phil
