Was able to take my bike on its' first very short ride yesterday. Before riding, I had noticed over the last several months while still in the shop working on the bike that it seemed very stiff trying to shift out of neutral into either first or second gear, and then trying to return to neutral. This was while the bike was just sitting and not running. Upon taking it for its' first ride, it was again still very stiff/difficult to shift into low gear. Upon riding away from a stop the clutch engagement was very smooth, but upshifting into second was, again stiff. I didn't go far enough to get out of second gear. I had drained the trans and refilled with rotella 15w40 with the recommended amount of oil, when I first started working on the bike. I have used this oil in other wet clutch bikes. There was no gear clash upon shifting and clutch engagement and disengagement was normal and smooth. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what may be my problem may be?

I would recommend first removing the counter sprocket cover and look for sludge build up around the shift shaft. This accumulation would be from chain lube and road dirt and possibly a loose counter sprocket nut that will cause an oil leak in this area. A bent shift lever shaft may also be a possible cause, very unlikely to be an internal problem in my opinion.

hudson, Thanks for the response and suggestion. I have not had this sprocket cover off since I have had the bike. I will investigate this possible cause.

hudson, You hit it very close with your suggestion. Upon trying to remove the counter sprocket I found that the shift lever shaft was nearly seized in the cover. With plenty of penetrating oil, patience, and time it eventually came off and it did have the expected accumulation of dirt and grime inside the sprocket area. After shining up the shift shaft and reinstalling the cover, shifting seems to be as normal. Thanks again for the suggestion.
