Motobatt make a decent product.
I have one in my RE and it's still going strong after three years of abuse.
The size I'm using is the same as what you'd use in a GT750 or GSX1100, so it's physically smaller than the original RE battery and battery tray, but it has more than enough grunt to start the RE - highly recommended.

Will you do my taxes for me?
One of my bikes had a (group) EXT20L sealed battery and it works great. That group number should be common to almost all motorcycle battery manufacturers. This one is a CarQuest Platinum which is a large auto parts chain here in the States, I'm sure you have something similar. It is completely a sealed motorcycle battery but I'll bet it is still lead acid.
I like the el cheapo garden tractor battery for $30. It fits right in there, has 450 cca, and will crank the bike over all day long. If your bike is a rider..... I'm just sayin'..

I guess it doesn't hurt to put battery info on this site also so when people do search the internet, the result will come here hopefully. I too am using a MotoBatt battery but mine is used for my GT750 dragbike. MotoBatt is really high quality and the price is very reasonable. I got mine on eBay but they are available elsewhere. That's where a good internet search would come in handy if you can't find it on eBay with reasonable shipping costs to you. As you can tell, I highly recommend them.

I'm in Australia and bought a sealed DEKA, model number ETX20LA. It has 400 cca. It's a tight squeeze being slightly taller than stock but I just removed the plastic battery tray and it's perfect.
Trouble is, it's expensive. I'd go the smaller battery like the GT750 etc that my neighbour from the northern netherlands recommends. You really don't need the massive cca's.
The full size Motobatt also works very well:
Motobatt MBTX30U
OEM was possibly:
Yuasa Y60-N24L-A2 (Colin Packer FB)
Modern alternative:
YTX20LBS Yuasa (Colin Packer FB)

I ordered 3 Motobatts today - 1 for the RE5, one for the KH500 and the other one for the Triumph. Should be here next week. I would hope they'll last for a good long time.

Found this Battery for sale today . £65. the size is 186 x 130 x 170 mm and 30 A/h and its sealed type weighing in at just under 10kg. (not sure what that will do to the MPG though ) I hope it lasts as long as my Lucas one has.

I ordered 3 Motobatts today - 1 for the RE5, one for the KH500 and the other one for the Triumph. Should be here next week. I would hope they'll last for a good long time. Update. All 3 Motobatt batteries I bought in 2014 failed within a couple of years. The RE and the Triumph need a lot of oomph to crank them and the Motobatts just didn't last in either bike. The KH (kickstart) lasted a few months longer but also started losing charge after about 3 years. So, having sat staring at the RE for the last few years I am now retired and can start restoring it. Any suggestions for a good alternative? I tried Yuasa but they don't list anything anymore. Maybe a mower battery will do the trick?

Yuasa battery still available in UK Y60-N24 LA Take care if you choose a AGM battery. I have had 2 fail on me , like a fuse blowing. And total loss of power. On contacting the supplier, he explained that If a AGM battery is over voltage charged it can short out The AGM batteries are designed for modern charging, he said. On checking my battery input @4000 RPM Occasionally it would spike at 18+ v . I have since changed to Yuasa and altered the settings on my regulator.

I have been a Yuasa user for forty plus years. 0ne recent failure at 2 1/2 years of use, that was said by the Yusasa tech rep. to be a broke internal bus bar. I am using YIX30L-BS for the RE This is a sealed AGM and I have never heard of one leaking. It is the correct size front to back and height, left to right it is 1 inch narrow, I have 1/2 inch rubber spacers glued to the left side of the battery box and one to the right side retaining strap. I recommend following the fill and initial charging instruction as these are critical to good battery life as is keeping it on maintenance charger when not in use ( 1 to 2 months) Every regulator I have check even a new N.O.S regulator was set to high by the service manual spec.and needed adjusting, so I think this may be a common problem and should be checked. This battery is very common size ( use in many Harley's) and can usually be found for about $125 and made here in the U.S.A. Other than the one failure mentioned above I have always gotten at least 5 years from Yuasa AGM's and have also went past 10 years a few times. Spec's for amperage, 31.6 Ah and 400 CCA more than enough to crank an RE5.

I realize this post was started long ago, and prices and availability have probably changed considerably since then, but I purchased a Deka battery for my bike earlier this year when I got to the point where I could start my bike. I cannot comment about long term performance, but so far it is working well for me. It is an AGM battery, has generous CCA, is made in the U.S.A., and is cheaper (for us here in the U.S. anyway) than the Chinese made Motobatt and others. As Wayne mentioned, I did need to remove the plastic battery tray, but then it did fit. In response to HGH 770N how would using an AGM battery cause your system to overcharge It's still a 12 volt battery regardless of what type it is. I have researched that AGM batteries are sensitive to overcharging.

It does fit with the tray, Quawk, check your voltage as described in the service manual, just to be sure. All batteries can be damaged / life shortened by to high of a charging voltage. Please let us know what you find.
