Hi all! I’ve only ever seen one RE5 in the flesh, back in 1980 and was smitten immediately! It was a blue M model. I’m on the cusp of purchasing my first RE5, a black A model. It’s able to be turned over on the kickstart but no attempt has been made to start it. It’s been in dry storage in the good old USA for a number of years so my questions are: Where do I start with regard to recommissioning? Where can I get an oil filter and spark plug? What is the preferred oil? What is the new best battery to get? I have the NOVA. How do I register it? Anything in particular I should be aware of? All assistance gratefully received!

What is the preferred oil? This thread gives part numbers for acceptable oil filters in the US. It also gives a garden variety oil that's completely safe to use (factory recommended) but also notes some alternatives if you want to experiment. re5rotary.proboards.com/thread/2916/oil-filter-which-useSpark Plug: send a Private Message (PM) to member TYP110 (Michel). He can sell you an original plug. The 9 is the original and NGK later supplied the cooler 10. Otherwise contact member T140V (Stuart). He makes spark plug adaptors that will allow the use of modern plugs (he can advise which one). Or search ebay UK, that's where Stuart sells them. You'll need to make one more post before you can send PM's by the way. What is the new best battery to get?Motobatt MBTX30U is very popular and works well. The one in my RE5M would be at least 7 years old in 2022 and still gives a strong start. Otherwise look here: re5rotary.proboards.com/thread/3177/which-battery?page=1&scrollTo=11262I have the NOVA. How do I register it?I'm in Australia so can't help on that one. Anything in particular I should be aware of?Go here and download the Suzuki Bulletins for free. Bulletin 9 gives a step by step guide to setting up the cabling. An essential read. re5rotary.proboards.com/thread/379/re5-parts-service-manuals-onlineYou'll almost certainly need to pull the carby at some point and give it a good clean (preferably ultrasonic) and check the set up. The above is to just get you going. As far as restoration goes, how far do you want to go? A tidy up? A ground up? At this stage, get it going. Let's check the proper unit (engine) before we go any further.

Thanks Wayne! Much appreciated. The RE5 arrived today and at first glance appears to be ‘all there’! The engine is free and the bike appears to have been decommissioned prior to storage. There was oil in the rotary chamber, the cooling system has been drained and the oil in the sump and transmission system seems fresh. The fuel tank was also dry and the fuel pipes disconnected. I’ll start the recommissioning process as described after a compression test.fingers crossed!
