I was wondering if anyone uses anything other than the GTX 20w50?
I used 75w80 and 75w140 wet clutch oils in my GT750 back in the day and it shifted better, plus the oil would not look used up after 1000 miles like the 20w50.
I'm figuring there must be better gear/wet clutch lubricants other than what was used in the day.

Yes. In the "which oil" thread on FAQ we talk about using alternative gearbox oils and specifically recommend not using GTX20-50 (as per US Castrol guidelines). Belray straight 80W gear oil helps a lot of people with starter clutch issues but fine to run regardless.
There's a myriad of suitable oils out there for motorcycle gearboxes. From garden variety Castrol, Mobil to just about anything on the shelf. Manual recommended 20-40W for the transmission but you can work around that a little.
I personally haven't used a straight gear oil. I run Castrol or Mobil 4T, no problems but not manna from heaven either.

One benefit of the RE5 is the separate trans. oil. 75W gear oil is a great choice. INHO. Use what you liked in your GT. I mix a cocktail on seasonal temperatures changes. Tim

I spoke to an engineer at Golden Spectro and he recommended the Spectro 80w gear oil, it replaces 20w50 and has additives for the clutch.
I prefer to use whale blubber but that stuff is so hard to find, need to smuggle it in from China.

Haha, China wouldn't be sending us anything these days in AU, smuggled or not.
Let us know how the spectro goes.

Curious, what oils are the Castrol and the Mobil 4T? Tim A general four stroke oil, semi synthetic: I use the cheaper mineral in a 15-50. Generally higher temps in AU so I'm not worried about the higher than recommended weight and so far (15 years) no issues:
