Hi, I'm new to the forum. Just purchased a RE5 in need of restoration.. not familiar with this bike but willing to take any advice. Ideally I need info relating to getting the engine running before I start spending money.. the bike has been stood for years, it does turn over but no spark... any pointer would be welcomed. Cheers. Nick.

Hello Nick,
Where in the world are you?
With the ignition 'on', can you hear a high-pitched whine? If not, it's likely the CDI box is the culprit ....

Welcome Nick. Lots of info and help on this site. I recommend you read work shop manual and familiarise your self with the workings and the pre start up procedures that has been listed on this forum. If your in the UK There are a few of us,including myself that maybe able to help. I hope you've bought a bike with a good unit. Regards Rog

Thanks for responding.. I hooked a battery up and yes I can hear the high pitched sound.. didn't crank it but it turns over on the kick start. Air filter fell apart lol.... Will I need to strip the carb... cables are solid and choke stuck. Looks like a pig to get off and strip. I'm new to this type of bike, so I want to take it slow and not damage anything. Many thanks...

Cable solid. This is probably the port valve seized . Please take care and read or ask for advice to save time or damage.

There is a huge amount of information that will answer ever question you may have... You just have to search for it and read past threads.
Before you touch the bike with a wrench/spanner, read the service manual cover to cover at least five times.
Good luck!

What Jess said. Even reading it multiple times doesn't help for some folks like me. There is a huge amount of knowledge here and helpful people. Welcome!

Just a thought re your seized throttle cables and port valve. If the PV is seized, you should be able to turn the throttle grip a little bit. The PV doesn't start to move 'til the grip has been moved a bit. Pop the cover off the PV (beneath carby up against side of engine is a little cover with a metal arm holding it in place. Loosen phillips head and remove cover) and you'll see what's going on. When you first move the throttle grip a plate moves in the PV cable box and it's got a tab on it. The PV itself doesn't move 'til that tab touches another tab directly connected to the PV shaft. If you can't move the throttle at all, something else is probably seized. Re the Carby, the awful truth, yes, you'll need to clean it (ultrasonically). There's a full carby photographic strip down here: re5rotary.proboards.com/thread/3030/carburetor-photographic-carby-stripHere's another carb setting thread: re5rotary.proboards.com/thread/122/carburetor-adjustment
