I did exactly the same, I suffered a second rate bike for years because I thought that’s how it was, I even had a couple of local bike shops have a go, and eventually got someone who knows what they’re doing to look at it.
What a difference, it’s like a different bike.

With the new fuel lines I could see bubbles in the fuel. Texted Jess, got a text back with a suggestion to change the vacuum line, bubbles gone. He told me when I picked up the bike to let him know if I had any concerns about it. Found out he walks the talk which is rare these days.

The RE has turned into my go to bike for running errands or just getting out and about. It's gone from the ok I haven't ridden it in a while and need to ride to, yeah, RE5 today.
