Finally gave in and took my RE-5 down to Jess today for him to do his magic on the carb. Also asked him to make sure the water pump was fine and get the jerk out of the transmission when it is put into first gear. I've been messing with the carb for years and just can't get it right, the flat spot is there no matter what I did. Really appreciate Jess taking it to sort it out and am looking forward to a better running rotary.

Yup, there's some I just can't get right either. Can be frustrating.

You put it in the right hands.

Yep, he's addressed some other issues. The timing chain is shot and oil to the proper not flowing as it should. Looking forward to getting the bike back and smoother running.

Just curious, for general info, How many Klm Don? I'm surprised at the primary chain slack. It'll be one to take mental note of.

Wayne, I don't know actual mileage of the bike. It's a frankenbike as far as I can tell and the mileage on the speedometer is probably low.

Thanks Don. Next time I have my clutch cover off I'll have a good look at my chain. Tim's got some super high mileage bikes. I must ask him about his experience.

My thoughts are if oil changed regularly the chain would probably last over 50k . I have stripped some down and chain very loose at 20k miles . the oil is grey and like cutting paste . No wonder chain and sprag clutch wears quickly . 1.5lts of oil and only a 10 mins job. it’s worth changing regularly.

Just a reminder the oil and transmission change intervals are 2,000 mi. or 3,000 km.
Late production bikes eliminated the magnetic drain plugs. A good idea to find magnetic replacements.
My preference for warmer climates is 75W Weight hypoid gear oil for a possible bit of additional load protection
over the 20W-40 (diesel grade)? book recommendation of transmission oil.

3000km?
Four or five changes a year?
Considering the gearbox oil change interval in all modern vehicles (which experience high torque and power loads and high speed operation) is in the order of tens of thousands of km, I fail to understand how it isn't possible to run oil in an RE5 gearbox/PD out to at least 10,000 km - no way is that oil being that badly abused by what are pretty low power, torque levels and speeds of moving parts of an RE5...
Maybe gear/engine oil was a bit crap in the '70s - decent gear oil now should be well capable of much more than a 3000 km change interval.

Modern oils may not help the crap Japanese steel of the '70's which is happily making grinding paste out of whatever oil you use (I was a Federated Iron Worker back then and during a quiet time (and just to get rid of it) we'd run a roll of Japanese steel through the factory. The machines would be plagued by jams from torn steel). Just a thought. Came across this today, a post by JESS on FB. "Grinding paste" or "home made lapping compound" as he says. He also flushes gearboxes with kerosene before refilling. Not a bad idea:

Got the call today. Bike is ready to pick up and I'm looking forward to riding it again. Had one back in the late 70's and toured all over the mid west on it plus a trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan. Looking forward to making some long rides on this one. Heading down to Jess's place in the morning.

Picked it up this morning and took a short test ride before loading it. Ran great and really appreciated all Jess had done to it. He fixed the lurching clutch, re-ran the fuel lines, fixed the primary chain, and took care of several other issues. Once I got home took "Cantankerous Critter" out for a long ride and it was a completely different bike. Ran like the RE5 I owned back in the late 70's. Jess did a great job working on the bike and it's great to be riding the old thing again.
