There were two rear mudguards used on the RE5. Early and late. Not sure where the changeover occurred but after 14498 VIN. The way the guard mounts at the front has changed. It no longer hangs from the under seat frame cross member. It's bolted to the frame through the sides at the very front. The old guard has a stiffener plate and nuts welded to the inside to allow bolting from the frame cross member. The new guard still has the mounting holes (which are no longer used) but no nuts. If you have a bike with this later guard, could you please PM me the VIN number or just reply to this post. EDIT: The parts book clearly lists the late guard as "A". If we could find the VIN, it may pin down when genuine "A" factory manufacture started and therefore the number of converted M's (keeping in mind that the factory themselves converted excess stock of M's). The late model is foreground. Note the extra mount point at the very front. These will not work on an earlier model (ask me how I know.....): The welded nuts and stiffener plate are no longer present on the later guard seen to the right:

Also the front half / inner fender is different to match the rear chrome fender. I would think the frame must be different as well, but my parts book shows just one part number for the frame. Anybody have a picture of the late model version mounted in a frame ?

I have the early style guard on my A # 15971 I think it's all original and there are no obvious mounting points on the frame for the side bolts.

Wow, that's very late in production. Thank you for posting. Very interesting.
