A few months ago I was moving some RE5 parts on my attic and came across a strange looking metal grill mounted onto a RE5 radiator. I remember seeing it several years ago being part of a collection of parts I bougt but I didn't look further into that at the time. It looked to me as a sort of aftermarket part or somebody did a nice home-job and made a grill for his own. I mailed a few pictures to my friend Roland and he immediatelly replied that this was a special grill for Australian bikes in order to avoid damage to the radiator when a collision with a kangaroo happend.....For a minute there he got me and I was wondering if this could be thrue..... ;-)) When looking closely at the grill I saw that it was very well made and fits perfect. I also had the impression that I've seen it somewhere before....A few weeks later I was looking in my parts book and eureka, I found the exact grill in the index page! But only in the index page, further in the parts book the picture is the one from the plastic grill. Here are some pictures: I asked Wayne and he found out that it was a pre-production grill and therefore probably the only one left! Didn't know that I had such a rare item in my attick and how it got in a small country like Belgium.... If anyone is interested in this grill for their collection or bike, send my a message because I am not doing anything with it and should deserve a better place then my attic ;-) Michel And for the record: Wayne confirmed that the kangaroo-story is true ;-)

Ha ha. Very effective against our Wallabies. Not so much against our big Reds. They had a whole team out here testing, animal activism wasn't in the seventies what it is now. Teams of Japanese flinging 'roos at passing bikes.
Thanks for posting Michel, rare piece of RE5 history and an even better story is how the heck it ended up in Belgium!

This is fabulous! And Wayne, thank you for the image of Japanese folks tossing kangaroos at RE5s!
TYP110, please do write a sentence or two about how it got to Belgium. Oh yes, what else have you in that attic???

The radiator and grill came with 10 RE5's that I bought from a Dutch collector together with my friend Fonny back in 2013.
There were 9 Dutch bikes and 1 US-spec bike that was imported from the US about 10 years ago. I guess the radiator/grill came to the Netherlands that way....We will probably never know!
Sorry for the short reply, am going to my attic to search some more ;-)
