Good explanation Jess. A timing strobe light can easily be used to check advance and retard is working by using it on the timing marks . I use this method after static timing, run the engine and use timing strobe light pointed at the same timing marks to see start of advance/RPM. It is easier to do than adding a pointer and marking the end of the stater as per workshop manual .
