Hi everyone I just went for a ride on my A , and feel that it could do with up gearing , as it pulls really well in top (5th ) , has anyone put a one tooth larger front sprocket on theres and what they think of it , and Jess do you have them in 630 ?,

A member did post of using a 15 some time back. My experience is with a 42 and a larger rear tire as a good comfortable freeway runner.

Larger front sprocket may fray your wires on the gear selector switch. I have repaired a few of these switches , Maybe more due to a loose or worn chain but the chain runs very close to the wires. I have also seen some casing damaged through large sprocket and loose chain. 15 and 16 tooth sprockets seem easy to locate than the original 14 tooth. I would gear with change rear sprocket that are readily available from 39 to 45 tooth . I fitted a 36 some years ago and attempted 125 mph at Santapod track . Just my experience Rog

What speed did you get Rog?
Sam told me the practical maximum he'd managed on his racing bikes was 125 mph. More may be possible but speed + reliability would put a cap on it.

Wayne. I was inspired at the time after a Visit to Monty & Ward and saw the “Doodle bug” in the shop window . I had a good long talk to Jeff about his racer he did for the Cadwell park race in 1976 . Jeff had installed a new proper unit in my bike after a mine failing after only 3200 miles. After covering around 2000 miles and 3 oil changes I had the opportunity to take the bike with other to Santapod . I changed the rear sprocket to 36 tooth and removed 2 links from the chain. I had already removed the original tyres and replaced them with Avon’s Set the shox on top setting and off I went down the track. I only managed 2 runs as a very bad wobble at over 120 almost took me off and I decided to ride the other bikes . The mean on the 2 rides was 123.6 mpg If Suzuki would have ever made the Twin Rotor it would have been a dangerous bike without some alterations .

Most impressive Roger. That's quite an accomplishment for a bike of that era, let alone a mere 497cc.
Also mighty brave. I've had wobbles on an RE5 at 90 mph indicated during a corner and it certainly sharpens the senses. Just that particular bike, not others at similar speeds.
I wonder if the shocks on the lowest setting may have helped? Squatting a bit more at the rear to increase rake and perhaps straight line stability? No point in speculating, but what a superb result.
Thanks,

I recall being impressed (as a youngster) when my instructor said the bike would pull redline in 5th one hand on the bible. (Tongue in cheek?) This was before the bikes introduction and to a kid a little green behind the ears . I would guess the engineers had a discussion in Japan as the new porting of the GT-750 lost its low end torque from the previous stump puller porting. Tim

Well I finally got around to fitting the 15 tooth front sprocket ( as I have had it for ages ) , test ride was good !!!, much nicer on highway ,smoother , lighter gear selection? ,3500rpm at 60 mph , pulls well still , drop back to 4th and appears to be about same gearing as 5th with 14 tooth sprocket , better in town to as 35 mph (60)kms ,is perfect in 4th as before 3rd was to low and 4th to high , back to h/way 60 mph (100Kms), on primary throat of carby so should be more economical , seams to have cleaned up slight stutter on change over to 2ndary throat ?, will go for a good long ride and see how fuel goes and if I find any problems but very happy with it so far , if you do decide to do it the first sprocket I recieved was wrong spline ( fine 12 ) not 6 , spares book was wrong !. urs Al in Aus

Thanks for the feedback Al. Look forward to hear how it goes. On mine the stock gearing at 100 kph meshes unfortunately with the harmonic vibration. I've often thought of gearing up but haven't got 'round to it. Might inspire me.

I've often thought of gearing up but haven't got 'round to it. Might inspire me. Yes that harmonics was one reason for the change in my bike too , but it just seamed to be reving to high aswell ,the vibration is much better ( I think the load on primary chain is greater with new gearing so chain wipes less ) the best test will be a fast run to Canberra , up the Clyde mtn last time I did it she was great , but feel new gearing might be even better !!!!!, hope there no Cops around .
