There is an RE5 engine rebuilding service that has been running in the south island of NZ for some time. Please note the service is available to anyone on the board willing to ship their old unit.
Please send a PM to re5rotary (Terry) and he can advise further.

Thanks Wayne I keep meaning to post some more about myself on this thread but time just passes by! Anyway I have owned my RE5 for about 25 years and I bought it not running and with no compression. Back then I was a rotary novice but with nothing to loose I stripped the unit down, found the problem (stuck side seals) borrowed the special tools required for reassembly and put her back together. Now 60,000ks later she is still running well with good compression. Since then I have rebuilt a couple of NSU Ro80 car engines which are very similar to the RE5 and about 5 other RE5 engines for others all with success. I have my own set of the seal compression tools required for reassembly which I had laser cut many years ago. As for apex seals and other internal parts I luckily haven't required too many but I do have some used apex and side seals. I have found most low compression problems have been caused by bikes sitting causing the side seals to be jammed in their grooves from rust and condensation. The bigger problems have been damage to the coatings on the side plates which I have been lucky enough to have sourced used replacements but this is getting harder and harder of course. I have a place that claims to be able to recoat the side plates but I have been waiting 2 years now for them to do a set for me so Im not sure if this is going to be possible. Meanwhile here is a link to an RE5 I have just restored on New Zealands version of Ebay www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1890287205I am happy to rebuild engines for anyone in NZ or Australia or anywhere else for that matter regards Terry

That RE5 in the link is just gorgeous. You'd be one of the very few people in the world who can claim a true "ground up" restoration. Beautiful.

thanks Wayne, funny story with that bike, back some 20 years ago I ended up with one and a half RE5s with a job lot of parts. The complete bike had bent forks and the 1/2 a bike was basically just a rolling chassis with straight frame and forks. I sold them to a guy I knew who kept them for a number of years, bought a few parts but didn't make much progress. He in turn sold them to someone else who painted a few parts but not much progress. About 3 years ago they turned up for sale and I bought them back. Thought it was about time it was all put together instead of being left in boxes again and this is the result. I have actually been for the first run on it just before Xmas and it goes well and everything works. The carb needs a bit of fiddling of course but other than that I just need to put a 100miles or so on it so Im happy Im selling a good bike
