I will at some stage have the exhaust heat shields re-painted. They are in a good state of repair... not too bent and battered, but will need to be powder coated. The question is the original color.
Mine look matt black. Is this how they were or even satin?. The ones I have may have been re-done years ago. Satin would look OK I guess. What were they when they left the factory.....
Thanks Nairb

Semi gloss. Not flat, not gloss. Jeff

I don't know if you have "Dupli Color" brand rattle cans over there in the UK (available here in Auto Shops).
If you have, they have a paint called Dupli Color Roll Bar & Chassis and it's available in Satin Black (it used to be VHT brand Roll Bar & Chassis 'til bought out by Dupli Color). This paint goes on very smoothly and is very resilient on the heat shields over time (it's rated to 250 F). I have a couple of NOS heat shields that are still in their box, the finish is very close.

It looks like we do have the VHT brand on ebay. So I will get me a can. I was only thinking powder coat because I am taking a load of smaller bits from several bikes off to the local powder shop. I do think these exhaust shields are a bit flimsy and would not be good powder coated anyway.

I have had several sets powder coater in Satin black or as my coater call it “Agricultural black” Some still showing dents can be linished back and another light coat added on top . It’s very forgiving on scuffs that can pait would show up. I bought 2 NOS ones and one is mat finish and the other is a semi gloss like original frame ? Very strange.!!!

I am thinking the shields were similar to the tank lid cover and when I waxed my cover on my new bike , it was then gloss appearing
and no turning back. The word satin just sounds slick, not knowing the terminology.

Mine are original and they are satin black, I was only looking at them about an hour ago and thinking to myself that they need painting, spooky or what?

I once asked Sam what colour the original radiators were and he asked me what colour I wanted. He had in stock NOS radiators in flat, satin and semi gloss. The individual contractors to the factory could be a bit inconsistent it seems.

My can of VHT brand Roll Bar & Chassis has arrived. So I cleaned up one of the heat shields and Applied some can paint. I am pleased with the results. I think satin works well. Gloss would have looked too bright and Matt finish to dull for me anyway. One job less to do.
Can this also be applied to the radiator??. It also needs brushing up a bit.

Yes, it works very well on the radiator. I've also used it on the brake calipers although IMO it comes out a fraction too much on the flat side of satin in the latter case. This is all nitpicking though, I think you'd be happy with it.
