Hello, I am new to the boards here, but not new to RE-5's. I've owned two, a 1975 and a 1976, still have the A, and am about to get it fired back up after about a 5yr hibernation. As I'm cleaning it up and getting it ready to run again, I did remember a very specific and peculiar issue I was experiencing and hope someone here can help me out...
When the engine was running, at any speed, any temp, the oil pressure relief valve was going up and down very fast and in response to the RPM's. It would foam the oil in the LH sump, but, honestly, I never could find any other problems. It never ran hot, didn't smoke or knock, and the power seemed normal to me. I changed the oil (Castrol 20W50) a little more often than normal and drove it all over the place. I even replaced the oil pressure relief valve with the one from my (now parts bike) RE5M and it was still the same. It made enough noise that you could hear it over the engine, a sound sort of like something in the spokes of a wheel.
What would cause this? I talked to Sam about this years ago and he remembered hearing of it, but never could tell me any more specifics.
As I am typing this, I just recalled that I was running a NAPA oil filter, not Suzuki. Would that possibly cause this issue? Maybe a difference in the NAPA filter's internal pressure relief valve?

Just came across this while surfing the board.
I run a Ryco filter which the Ryco company recommended after sectioning an original Suzuki filter.
When cold, these filters sometimes rattle like crazy as the bypass valve opens and closes as it deals with the thick low temp oil.
Once up to temp, the rattle stops and the filter works fine.
Perhaps the bypass valve on your filter is set a little too low for the RE5 (which pushes oil out at 100 psi). There are several alternatives.

Wayne Praytell, what is the Ryco part number for that filter?

There's a story behind that Paul. I'll fill you in. I'm away at the moment, home tomorrow, will check the number and post it here over the weekend.

The aeration of the sump oil is something that I only noticed recently when I pointed a small flash light down the sump dip stick hole as the engine was running. When the engine cools the air in the oil disappears, the bike runs perfect and is fitted with a correct Suzuki oil filter. Would anyone like to look into their dip stick hole and see if their oil is aerated (small minute bubbles) when it's running. I've used a K&N hp-1003 oil filter with no problems on my M.

I've seen the aerated oil on one RE5, the only one that I've bothered to look at. I'll check it on mine tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the RYCO filter is a Z191A. However, and this is where the long story comes in so I'll keep it real short. RYCO NZ insists that only the RYCO version is the one to do the job. The REPCO equivilant is not. Something to do with slightly different components and temperature tolerance.
I'm not sure how the filter numbers cross the Tasman. I once found, in NZ, which car the RYCO Z191A was for and figured that I could just buy that filter in Australia. But I was a regular visitor to Auckland bought many of these filters so never bothered and no longer remember what car it fitted.
I"ve been running them for the last 12,000 klm with no problems. I also like them because they are silver and are quite short and compact. They don't detract from the styling ("....aesthetics of a train wreck" to quote an '80's Cycle article on the RE5).

Wayne Thanks Wayne. For everyone's info (well those in Aus anyway) there is now no such thing as a Z191A. Ryco no longer list it. However, it seems a Z191A is now a Z386 and that's what I installed on my RE5 today. It looks like this: The really good thing about using this filter is the price. $9.00 from Super Cheap... Cheers Paul McB

engines will always airate the oil in the sump thats why if you fill to the brim there is no room for the air expansion and you end up blowing seals etc out. i have seen a few bikes and car engines with blown seals etc due to owners overfilling with oil regards mike

Well Paul, I did say that I'd bought a good supply. It's been at least 9 years ago that I last bought one in Auckland.
Thanks for the new part number. See you next week.
