Hello, Anyone ever have this happen? I think its my fault. I had my extra spark plug wrapped up in a rag under the seat. It may have grounded out the connector? Re5 wire melt by redbug2, on Flickr Regards, redbug2

Can't see the picture but I had melted wires under the seat. My rectifier and alternator were shot. Could just be a dirty connection.

Sorry, I always go brain dead with Flickr... So, it may be my Rectifier? Or, a dirty connection.. The rag was melted to the connector and all of the insulation fused together on the wires. . I'm just glad I made it home!

A dirty/bad connection is the most likely culprit. The same thing happened to my CX500 turbo recently but when I checked the alternator on that, I found that all windings were zero ohms to earth, so the stator is cream crackered on that as well as the connector (common fault on CXs) , and with the CX it's a major job to replace as the engine has to come out 🙁

If you are talking about the melted connector, it is the rectifier.
In answer to your question, "Has anyone ever had this happen before?"... The answer is not "if" it will happen but when...
The factory rectifier was dangerous, and an honest to goodness fire hazard. It has a genuine design flaw. If it were made today it would be a recall item, in today's litigious society.
IMHO it is a part that should be replaced on ALL bikes. That said, I had a small batch that I designed made several years ago.
As always, Just my opinion.
Best,

Def check the alternator/stator as well. Specs are in the manual.

Ok, I'll replace the rectifier. Any ideas on a replacement? I'll probably need three down the line. Should also see about my brother-in-laws Re5 rectifier.
Where do we have a checklist for these known failure points? I would like to address them all before the bike fails on the road!
