I've seen a ton of articles about this the last couple days, but they all point back to a single source which was another magazine. Hopefully that other magazine had a legit source.

The style reminds me of the nitro funny cars from the mid to late 70's.

Problem is the Tesla is the future this is old hat .When you look at the factory he is building he knows Electric is the the way to go ...piston engines and rotory have had there day..sorry am sure some will prefure the old way but when you can plug your car in to power your house for free if you have solar panals then why pay double the price for a petrol engine rotary sports car ...Its not going to sound like a RE5 !

Electric car is ok in theory, but I think there is way too much infrastructure update needed before electric can kill the petrol engine. I think we have at least 20 years left before internal combustion is irrelevant, that's at least 15 years to enjoy the new Mazda rotary car.

Yes would be nice to keep the Rotary engine going ....But its fair to say only Mazda think its the future ....Am sure future Electric cars will have a mode so to sound in the cab like any engine you wish for ...Switch to rotory mode ....V8 mode ...Triple mode ...any mode ...

The chance of any rotary engine coming back is slim at best, speaking from an industry standard. This, I have some experience in. I'm the lead tech at a GM dealership and the Volt and hybrid tech. I had a Mazda Cosmo with the 20B back in the day. The rotary engine was discontinued because they couldn't make it compliant with the tougher emissions laws. Granted technology changes every day, but I know they tried throwing in everything but the kitchen sink to make it work. I would love to see it come back, but emission issues coupled with marginal market demand just doesn't seem feasible.
I agree that electric cars are the future and that we are seriously lacking in infrastructure. A sweet exhaust tone is always nice. lol Fiskers was the first American electric car company to mass produce and their car did have a fake exhaust tone. I thought it was pretty cool sounding though still synthetic. Unfortunately, poor management lead to them folding up shop.

Interestingly, haven't heard yet from Mazda. I recall reading Mazda released a small rotary hybrid for a vehicle leased to Japans government and/or some fleet account. I do know Mazda has hybrid experience from the days of Ford. I saw Mazdas equivalent of the Ford Explorer, a hybrid vehicle that the local Fire department was driving in So Cal.
How about a couple of electric drive motors coupled to the rotary?
SEVENSTOCK is coming up soon, bound to hear rumors flying about while there.
An electric motor revving up just doesn't have the same guttural impact as a rotary, especially when revving up in a high walled courtyard. Zoom-Zoom

This guy makes interesting arguments against the rotary engine. I thought Mazda had figured out a way to make the rotary without an oil injection system, I guess I was wrong. Interesting Points

Thanks redbug but in all honesty I gotta admit, I'm not too interested in even clicking on. After a few years around the RE5 and 2 RX-8,which the 07 was flawless, and a REPU that's a hoot, I'll respectfully pass. opinionated in So Cal

Well I'll be... Would've never thought they'd be able to use HCCI in a rotary given design and requirements to operate properly without it turning into a bomb. No valves to help control fuel and air timing and I wonder how they managed to boost the compression enough to achieve HCCI when the turbo isn't spooled. I think I saw somewhere that someone had the ratio down to 10.5:1 by seriously preheating the combustion mixture on induction. Maybe that's why they still need spark plugs? True HCCI doesn't require them. I am now very intrigued. So many questions. I would love to see a diagram or cutaway of the engine or even a tech sheet though I would suspect we won't see any for a while.
