Cheers for that Glenn. Curiously, the eBay listing shows the chain as also fitting the Suzuki RM370 and RM400? Really? That's a new one on me if it is the case. Can anyone confirm? David I'm gonna call BS on it being an RM part. All the RMs had a geared primary drive - there ain't no chain in there! Just checked on Zedders Suzuki programme only 2 bikes listed for that part number RE5M & RE5A. And Rm's are gear primary drive. Regards Stuart.

The vast majority of unit-construction motorcycle engines are gear drive to the clutch.
As an aside, Maico bucked the trend with their single two-strokes and used a chain, but it was so they could run the crank in a reverse direction in an attempt to improve the handling... When you look at a Maico running from the left hand side, the crank itself is turning clockwise (just like an RE!).

Hmm, perhaps we should look at a primary gear drive conversion... mmm, bet that would be noisy!

Hmm...
Could work, but yes it would be noisy if straight-cut is used, and would possibly require damping of some kind given the inherent harmonic vibration?

Geared primary drive could be done and is standard on other Rotary bikes.
DKW / Hercules have it, Van Veen use it and Norton designed it but actually didn't put it into production but the lug is in the primary drive casting ready to convert. Neither use straight cut gears though for the reasons goandy points out.
Just a thought.
Regards, Joe.

Maybe this thread has shown that any member would be taking a big risk in having these chains Remanufactured in bulk to sell on ....Am sure the unit price would be equal or more than these if you had say a hundred made up ...to sell on with a profit ....Who would want to shell out say £5000 to have a batch made up when these few NOS chains are not snapped up ...
