Hi I am trying to get a bike here in New Zealand going again for the owner who has had the bike from new. I have stripped the 'proper' but there is a big 'chunk' of the coating on the side plates missing and the rotor housing has some damage as well. Does anyone have a spare pair of side plates and rotor housing in good condition they want to sell or even a motor that needs a rebuild?
regards Terry

I had a bloke contact me a little while back with a used proper unit for sale. Let me get in touch and get back to you.
Sourced some NOS sideplates for a bloke about a year ago, lucky find.

Yup, getting hard to find. Might be worth keeping the old bits as they could possibly be recoated and reground.

Hi Terry. Any thoughts on what may have caused the damage? Lack of lubrication?

I have heard back from my contact and he's not willing to sell his used engines at the moment.

I have a spare proper unit that came with my bike.
I'm pretty sure my bike has had the proper replaced at some stage and this is the old one. I haven't really looked at it, its in an original factory box and still bolted together, I have no idea of its condition or why it was replaced but its definitely been used.
How much of a hurry are you in and where are you in NZ?
Mike

Hi Mike Im in Christchurch Im in no particular rush I guess, I just want to see if I can source the parts before I give the owner his options. Presumably your spare motor was swapped out because it had a fault, but its probably worth stripping to see if anything can be salvaged from it. I have just stripped the original motor plus 2 others, none have good side plates and only one has a useable rotor housing so not a great strike rate with donors so far.
Is your bike a runner and on the road or a 'work in progress'?

I will open it up and see what its like inside over Xmas. It looks complete so hopefully has some parts than can be salvaged for someone. My bike runs OK, rego is on hold, need to sort out the carb

With an original owner perhaps he can offer some history. I have a 76 bike with a frozen A model proper bought, as is, that I have not disassembled. I don't know the history of why it is frozen. I removed it for a core exchange to find out the cores were no longer required to purchase a new proper. Tim

I think it is just a fault with the coating or an age thing. On the other side plate you can see where the coating has started to lift in a few places. Sooner or later this high spot will wear through or get caught by a seal. Once this has happened Im sure the coating will start coming off fairly quickly. The owner said it just started getting hard to start in the 1980s so he pushed it into a corner of his shed and left it. Probably safe to say enough coating eventually came off causing the low compression and hard starting. This side plate had the coating all over not just the spiral pattern regards Terry

This side plate had the coating all over not just the spiral pattern regards Terry I'm guessing , one of the earliest 300 engines. Tim

Curious...

Hi Jess,
I was going from memory and now I am pretty sure that is not correct. If I find anything i will let you know. Thanks for the wake up.

Terry,
I have another A model engine that was good but has sat out for a long period of time and partially uncovered. I Knew the owner and some history. Originally I oiled the proper up heavily when I purchased it as is. To the best of my knowledge the engine should be rebuildable and have good side and center housings but at some point my tape over the ports came loose. I would like to sell it in the frame. It may have other serviceable parts. For shipping I am in California. Questions, please ask. I am waiting to hear from a prior interest who will have first priority, Thank You. Tim
