What would be the best thing to put on my gas tank to protect the paint when I am doing the POR15? My biggest worry is getting the sealer on my paint and ruining the paint. I have to get this done before the bike gets goofed up from sitting too long. It has been over a year now since this happened. I'm going to take some vacation in the next week or 2 and want to get this done.

Id wrap it up in some plastic and seal the edges with good quality insulation tape. You might be tempted to use duct tape but that could pull the paint off in any weak areas. My RE tank has a few sections where the paint is actually floating on the steel underneath it so i know what will happen if i ever put any strong tape there.

I will do this and I think I will also wrap Saran Wrap around that also. What would be best to put on the holes where the leak is? For the petcock and sensor holes, Sam told me to cut some plastic and wrap some tire inner tube around it and then screw them on. I hesitate to take the black cover off the top of the tank. Do you think that I should? I'm just concerned about removing something that has been bolted in place for 34 years and right now the paint looks perfect.

For the holes depending on how big they are id stick on a piece of the insulation tape right over them. You would be tempted to put something into the hole but by putting tape onto the hole will allow the liner material to actually come through the metal which is better. You will need to touch up those spots exactly where the hole was since they will show up as a 'dot' of different colour than the tank. I removed the tank top cover with no issues, just loosen the two bolts and leave it for a while. Spray some WD40 around it if its stuck onto the tank and youre concerned about the paint coming off with the hinged bracket section. The oily WD40 will help move the bracket if its stuck to the tank top, but you will know once you loosen the bolts if its stuck or not. A plate with rubber for a sealing face bolted to the two lower openings will work fine to seal up those holes during the coating process.

I have to get my butt in gear on this and I will. Turns out I lost one of the rubber grommets that goes on the frame that the tank mounts to on the front. I'm hoping it is laying around somewhere but I doubt I could be so lucky.

The front tank grommets are still available and if yours are dropping off chances are you need new ones. Post some pics as you can of the process you use for the tank refurbishment
