Doing restoration work is always time consuming and recently i removed the shields off the pipes to refurbish them. It appears the previous owner or owners had them rattle can painted with some BBQ black thats got a stove enameled finish which i know isnt right.
I say this because the original paint that was under this top coat was different in texture as i was removing all of it with paint stripper.
On mine both front edges under the lower screws were folded under and smashed hard against the pipe so im not sure how that could happen on both sides.
A little body panel work to the shields in those areas had them looking very decent again.
One side has been paint stripped so far and then sanded. I could see they were never primed, just bare metal painted black which caused some surface rust in a few areas of the inside.
I then added a light coat of red oxide spray paint to its surface for better rust prevention before prepping for light re-sanding and finally painting.
Its quite easy to repair the usual waves the shields get when people lean against them by forming them over a slightly curved piece of material. You will need to check the strengthening lips along the edges for total straightness and dress them back after.
What you do not want to do is kink the shield as that will spell a major disaster, so do each side section between the middle hole very carefully as you work your way along the length of it.
Make sure its fitting the pipe properly by checking and rechecking it on the pipes screw stubs so its resting evenly along their length and not twisted or wrongly curved.
