I am having some exhaust pipes rechromed. I have come to the point where I need to decide to triple chrome plate (copper, nickel, chrome) or just straight chrome over steel. The worry is the copper bubbling under the chrome with the extreme heat. Has anyone had experience with this?

I had my pipes tripled chromed about 10 years ago and there is no evidence of bubbling at all. They were in very good condition to start with, but there appears no ill effect to the copper.

Reminder, the pipes are stainless steel if that has any effect on chroming? I'll ask a friend of mine that chromed his pipes maybe 20 years ago too.

Um, I don't reckon mine are stainless.
Or they're a stainless that rusts...

The internals are stainless. I have had 5 pipes Triple chromed with some success . The polishers have take care as the outer skin is somewhat thinner than the standard GT type pipes and they can easily burn through them when removing rusty areas I have had some slight "Peppering" in some areas but overall good and no issues over time and heat.

Thank you everybody for the feedback. Pipes are repaired, ready to chrome. I will go with the triple chrome process and hope for the best. Chrome is a crap shoot these days no matter who you use.

The better chromers can give them a thick coat of copper to fill any small imperfections- they buff that back to a smooth surface then recoat in cu,ni,cr

I've just had a pair chromed by Marque Restore in Coventry. They took 17 weeks to do the job but a lot of that time was spent in a caustic bath removing 40 years worth of carbon from the internals. They weren't the best pipes and had a few holes where the outer skin had corroded right through. They repaired the holes and did a superb job of the chroming. Very hard to spot the repairs. I'd recommend them though not cheap, 400 quid for the complete job. Then again, no decent chroming is cheap.

Sent from my Nexus 4 using proboards 400$ for rechroming the two exhausts...!Thats a bargain! They charge 1000 euro over here in Holland/Belgium. I payd 250 euro for 4 indicators only to find out afterwards they send it to POLAND to have it done over there....

Pipes are back from copper for the third time. I have been approving each step along the way. They will get a final buff then into the chrome tank. I am doing two sets. Hope I get one great set. With the extra copper, will be $600.00 for the four of them.

Jeff,
That sounds like a deal. The absolute BEST chromer I have ever worked with is in your neck of the woods. The name of the company is Meclec. They are in Fresno.
In 30 years of fooling with this stuff, I have never gotten better results or service. They are not the most expensive, nor the cheapest, but their work is impeccable.
Best,
