Hi
should this be gloss or satin or even matt, the underside of mine looks satin and looking at various photos on google it is hard to say and open to owner interpretation.
many thanks,

I went with a satin. Holds up better in the sun in my experience.

I have had an NOS one and it's satin.
But my painter thought he'd do an uber job for me after all the work I sent him and pulled out all the stops on the cover delivering a mirror finish gloss black. What could I say. Smile and thank him for a great job. His heart was in the right place.

Here you go, from the horse's mouth........this is written by Sam Costanzo himself:
Some of the confusion in the difference between semi-gloss and satin gloss color on the fuel tank cover is by just putting some wax on the satin during clean up, it changes the color to semi-gloss. The oils in the wax give it a different hue. Recently I opened up three NOS fuel tank covers in their original package. All three were #44270-37001. Two were semi-gloss, and one was satin. How's that for adding some more confusion to the mix?! Most likely, with the slow sales of the Rotary, Suzuki packaged whatever they had on hand. For they had no intention on manufacturing more of these covers. Close observation of two Rotaries on display (one with 8 miles and one with 17 miles, M&A models), one of them has satin and the other has semi-gloss. Based on this, it would be correct to either have semi-gloss or satin finishes on these covers.

Its like the frame finish.
Something the other Japs at the time didn't or couldn't do, a semi-gloss finish. I think its more like cheep washed out paint . Each batch of bikes painted differently .

Excactly Rog, Sam sent me numerous emails on colour for radiators, calipers etc etc and I came to realise that there was no "original" colour. The factory was just getting whatever the subcontractor dished out and the colours were dependent on what they had on the shelf that week.
If you restore to a decent "ballpark" on ancillary items, you're going to be pretty close to what the factory had anyway.
And as for the tank colours, Jess has dozens and dozens to compare and he reckons those spraypainters were breathing too many fumes when you see the variations in the one colour.
