Does anyone know if filters have any kind of shelf life? These filters could be 30 years old, I wonder if the filter material (folded cardboard?) breaks down over time.

I have always used NOS oil filters and never gave it a thought about a shelf life until your MSG. I would think that a damp storage could cause mould and rot to the compressed paper and you would see evidence of the damp rusting the thread and of coarse the box would show the 1st signs. On another issue I have a NOS air filter un opened but it has totally disintegrated to a black powder like "oases" inside its air tight bag. ( ??) I will try and photo it. Rog

it never occurred to me either until you mentioned it. I've been slowly gathering a small stock pile of spares including NOS OEM oil filters. I've been running an aftermarket oil filter while sorting the bike but now I wouldn't hesitate to install the more expensive/rare OEM. The ones I've bought do have a small piece of plastic that you remove before installing. This seems to protect the insides from possible debris & maybe moisture to some point. Denver Colorado is dry, very dry & moisture is never a problem. But I did notice that this seller is located in Oregon.....

Rog I've had this happen to an air filter sitting in the bike, seen it on another and heard about it from several others. It seems they're prone to it but am surprised it happened to your NOS one. I run an original filter in one bike but also use a fly screen on the engine side of the filter grid. The filters start to break up eventually and the screen should stop great lumps getting sucked in before I spot the breakdown. This one however has been in use for at least 10 years and is still okay. When it dies, I'll be using the new RR filters. I've got those in other RE's and they work fine and shouldn't have the breakdown issue.

Rog I bought a pallet of NOS Kawasaki parts from the 70's, a couple of years ago and all the foam filters were junk, disintegrated like you have said.
