Now before some of you start, I know all about the proper cleaning of the carbies, setting the port valve timing etc, but I just wanted to share this.
A friend of mine has been playing around with his RE5 and having lots of problems with getting the bike to run right with the standard rebuilt/ultrasonically cleaned carby so he bought a new old stock SU HIF44.
One adaptor block later and she's on. He hadn't had a chance to do any of the cables including the secondary valve, but just put some petrol in it and gave it a go.
Fired up beautifully and ran like no other RE5 I've seen. Seriously. Revved like a banshee and talk about responsive! That's in totally out of the box, untuned state.
I've got a CV type Stromberg 1.75" carby in the shed so I think I might attach that to mine as well and see what happens.
Just to keep the purists happy, the conversion it toally reversible and makes no mods whatsoever to the bike.
Can't wait to try it on mine!

Hi all, I'm sure I've seen an article on the micapeak site about this it includes a drawing for the adaptor manifold, was looking at going down this road when I bought my bike as the carb was totally wreked, had the carb overhauled by Jess so did not persue this any further. Have also read somewhere that when the engines are coming to the end of their lives this conversion gives them a new lease of life, plenty SU carbs on ebay. Have had a search about and found it, also show how to play with the electronic ignition. Click on the link, couple of old posts from wayne on the bottom. www.nwlink.com/~paulcl/re5/RE5techtopics.htmRegards Stuart

Yes, I read those posts years ago and a chap called Carl had a M here in Perth with an SU on it, but I didn't really take much notice at the time.

Andy, I'd be very interested in a proper review of the bike fitted with the SU carb.
It seems 'plenty' of people have done it, but no definitive expose of the pros/cons exists.
Reckon you could be the Board's resident carb-swap liaison?

That's got me thinking about installing at Keihin CV off of an HD. I've got a bunch of them from Mikuni flatslide installs, and I've always liked them. I think I saw a video on youtube with a guy with a Mikuni Flatslide on his re5.

I think you can pretty much use any carby- but the CV style seem to be the go as far as I'm concerned. If you want me to be the carb-swap liaison bloke, then who am I to refuse? Mine might be some months away tho- still have a couple of other projects with a higher "wife" priority than playing with my bikes....

Keep us posted. The SU conversion was all the rage more than 10 years ago with great successes reported but it then it all sort of fizzled. I figured if they were that good, we'd have heard a lot more about them.
I'd like to know if the "experiment" is repeatable and how you fair with it Andy.

I was around a guys house the other day looking over a couple of his bikes and he had made a very interesting mod to his Norton Commander Rotary. He had removed the original SU carbs and installed a fuel injection system. I am going to get more info on it but it looked very neat and appeared to use an ECU with open source software that could be tweaked infinitely to give best fuel/air mixtures across the rev range. A possible mod for an RE5??.... then perhaps a turbo too ;D

I know that Dave C, the editor of ROC newsletter did an SU conversion but I never heard how it went. I asked him to write an article about it but he didn't while I was a member.
As Dave was always scratching for copy, it doesn't give me confidence that it is the "wonder" fix that some claimed. If it was, surely he'd have been in print about it. He was having serious carb troubles with the stock unit when I met him. But I'd be more than happy to hear about it if it works.
Are you out there Dave ?

DIY electronic fuel injection is another world of hurt just waiting for those that dare to enter....

I have a manifold adapter built for a Keihin FCR. I've fitted it and the carb up to my bike, but apart from idling badly, I couldn't get it to run at all. Having spoken to Christian in Switzerland about the setup he's got on his bike, it would seem the jetting has to be richened quite dramatically, which would tally with how it doesn't run as it dies immediately the throttle is opened. I shelved it all last year when I was fine-tuning the original carb, but if Andy's gonna have a go, I'll revisit my FCR setup, see how it goes and let everyone know what happens. Oh and thanks Andy BTW... it's not like I have enough to do in my shed as it is .
