I'm going back together with my clutch cover and I am curious as to what is the best way to prime the oil pump? I was thinking of packing it with grease or Vaseline, it seems like if I just lube it with oil that will simply run out of the pump before I get the bike started.
I suppose that some of these bikes have sat for decades and the oil pump still was able to suck oil out of the sump.
I looked in the shop manual but it said nothing about priming the oil pump.
Thanks! Tomo

Hi Tomo, I was the author of a pretty lengthy thread troubleshooting oil pump problems. I think I did about 5 or 6 clutch cover removals and refits between two bikes and consider myself "initiated".
There is no need to prime the oil pump. As long as you assembled it with a little bit of GTX to lube the components that should be fine.
The pump self primes and does so almost instantaneously on start up. Basically, if it doesn't self prime, then you've got a problem in the reassembly- that was what I had. Pump failed to self prime and on investigation, there was a good reason why not.
