I'm looking for a fuel tank sending unit if anybody has one. The original one I had began to leak through the resistor fitting. I tried to seal it, but no go. I took the spare one I had and installed it, but it always showed low fuel. Now it’s starting to leak. Sam has them, but they’re kind of pricey and money for the bikes is getting scarcer.

Meat,
One of the few parts I don't have... However, I may be able to repair it?
Best,
Jess

Rats! I bought a fuel sending unit from Sam and I still don't get a fuel light at low fuel. Something else must be wrong. The fuel light does not come on when the key is in the first position either. I think it should. I'll have to dig around a little.

Stupid question... Have you checked the bulb? Best, Jess

Stupid question... Have you checked the bulb? Best, Jess Not stupid. Actually I have not. Sam did his magic on the speedo/tach not too long ago. I'll check the bulb next time I have the unit off. I'm prioritizing issues at the moment.

If the unit is leaking from where the two wires go into it, you can clean it and seal the spot with plastic steel or JB weld. The key thing here is to clean the section 110% before applying the glue.

Having my tank off and cleaning it out at present, now ive removed the unit, its no more than a traditional low fuel sensor that was used on a lot of the Japanese cars from the late 70s to 80s. If yours went bad a person could buy a fuel gauge unit from such a car and transfer the sending unit to the RE5s base mount.

Hi Alan, The resistor works fine, the sealing grommet is shot & leaks through the mount. JB weld is not meant for gasoline immersion and turned to rubber and started leaking again. Jess gave me the solution to use Permatex Aviation Form a Gasket.

Hello Pete,, I've never used JB weld personally but many who have used it always tell me its just like plastic steel. I have however used plastic steel for many years on fuel tanks and other such applications where its in prolonged contact with gasolene and ive not seen any effects from the gas on it. The sensor on the RE5 i took out has some plastic steel smeared around the connector where the two wires pass through the mounting plate on both sides and its fine, no leaks there.
