This will sound like a really silly question, but which way round does the thermostat go? I'd assume the spring part goes on the inside, with the air bleed hole towards the top? I did look in the manual but it doesn't show it anywhere. I guess they didn't count on stoopid people playing with their bikes when Suzuki wrote the book!

I'm sure this is of little help, but I'm pretty sure the spring side only goes in one way. I didn't pay attention to where the hole was, and I've had no heating/cooling issues. Common sense tells me that the top would be the best, but I'll defer to the experts...

I tried it both ways round and it fits either! The book says to install with the little bleed hole to the top and the best fit to get the hole to the top is spring in (towards the proper unit)

Spring towards the proper unit and bleed hole to the top.
