Glad to be of help.
Gerry, when I spoke to the bloke re the tank, I had never heard of the "conversions". He was (is) a parts recycler in another state. He advertised a couple of RE5 items and when I answered the ad I asked about other stuff and he mentioned new tank and sidecovers. Naturally, 25 years after the bike's were available I asked how he came across such items. His answer was totally matter of fact and as if he expected everyone to know. That was the first that I'd heard about it.
In a completely separate conversation at least 10 years later, Ray told me the story re destroying the old parts and only because I was bragging about my new tank and how it was from a converted unsold showroom bike. He is very happy using "destroy" and RE5 in the same sentence. He hates them to this day. I think he was probably a dealer who lost money on them back in the day.
As a small aside, I also know the man who was charged with going around the dealerships and snipping off the B point wire on all the remaining M models.
The last two I know how to contact, the first guy I could probably track down without too much trouble.

Hi I know this also happened in New Zealand. So I guess it may be a 'down under' thing regards Terry

I think i bought mine in about 77, from a firm called motor cycle city in farnborough. it was a red M. I also worked for a suzuki dealer in Wokingham at that time. anyway, one day it seems that the tip of the sparkplug came off and went round the chamber, doing quite a bit of harm. So we took the bike down to suzuki GB in croyden. they fitted a new proper, and when it came back it had only one set of points. So in effect it had been modified to an a spec. so even more confussion eh!
