I'm curious about a couple of things...
1. If you pull the fuel tank, mounted to the left side of the frame is what appears to be a large condenser with several wires going into it. (like about 5). Is this really a condenser, does it ever go bad and why are they condensing so many circuits?
2. If I unplug my voltage regulator with the ignition on but the bike not running my battery voltage jumps up about half a volt or even a volt. Is this normal? The wires going into the voltage regulator don't look so good...... (The battery is fresh and fully charged)
Any thoughts would be awesome!

I'm sure I'll get corrected...but here goes
1. I think that's the ?? speed relay for the second set of points? I haven't got into that side of things yet on my bike.
2. Not good. At rest, switched off, your battery should be around 12.5ish V. Running, it should be from anything above that to 13.7-14.5V or so. It all depends on how your reg was adjusted. Sounds like your rec/reg units aren't operating correctly. You can adjust the points gap and end voltage in the reg- it's all in the service manual. If your rectifier is smoked then it will also affect the reg. Test the rec as described in the manual and on here. I'd probably recommend you replace them with modern equivalents- Jess sells them as do a few other retailers, even plug'n'play for our bikes.

I believe the item you're referring to is the engine speed relay. It's explained on page 80 of the RE5 service manual. Your voltage regulator uses an inductive coil to control the amount of voltage going to the alternator field coil. It will draw current. When the bike isn't running, it isn't producing any charging voltage, so it will just show a draw as long as the key is on. It shouldn't draw anything when the key is off. Wow... The engine speed relay. I have to study this I thought it was a condenser. I may also have problems with the voltage regulator. Modern replacements sound good to me. You guys are ever so helpful. Thanks to you I may whip this old bike into shape yet! ;D

Well I just went out and did exactly what you did and my voltage didn't really budge when I disconnected my reg. Just to make sure I even tried another reg and same result. 12.57-12.58 volts, ignition on, cdi whining like a stuck pig. Engine not running as most of it is lying on the shed floor! I'd say you have a probrem.

Just to make sure I even tried another reg and same result. 12.57-12.58 volts, ignition on, cdi whining like a stuck pig. Engine not running as most of it is lying on the shed floor! I'd say you have a problem. Most likely cause would be a rotor drawing too much. Could be the regulator itself, but I'd check out the rotor.
