Just a quick post to say that Steve here in Perth has rebuilt his proper unit the same time as mine, and yesterday he started it up- beautiful. Excellent compression, perfect start and no oil smoke. The coolant seals are holding up (his motor had severe coolant system bypass with oil in coolant before) so it's well done to him and a big thumbs up! It was a bit noisy though without mufflers, but the blue flames out of the manifold were entertaining! All he replaced was the rubber seals through the proper unit- all metal seals were good and he was too chicken to let me regrind his oil control rings! I hope to get my unit back in the bike in the next day or two and get that going again as well- it's been a long four years!

Do it. If you have a super smokey or blown coolant seals unit then its easy enough. The hardest part is getting hold of the assembly tools and regrinding the oil seals (which I've offered to do for people for the price of postage). If you have broken side seals, Mazda 12a or early 13b 1mm ones can be cut down to fit but all other metal bits will have to be custom made... Haven't put you off, have I?

Anyone know of someone who re-coats the side plates if they're peeling?

Its nice to know that some units can be bought back to life in the right hands

All I know is that the Norton overhaul guys in the UK were reapplying the moly coating to their motors. I'm really not sure about ours though but if its required, I'd be looking them up.

Fantastic news. I'll bet Steve's happy.

Fantastic news. I'll bet Steve's happy. He is- but now he needs to get it running right- starts beautifully but won't rev cleanly (too lean? as it starts to rev when you "pump" the throttle). I reckon it's a carby/port valve issue. He has the RR ignition kit fitted to cover the spark side of things. It'll be a really nice bike when it's all together- he has done a good job of it so far.
