Well. Spotted Andy. The Ratio is the same. The spinning faster was due to Fresh battery but more so due to NO Spark plug inserted after compression testing. The chain slack is not good, the adjuster seems far too week. and I think would explain why the strobe timing is very un stable, With fingers crossed this should help the bike run smoother and quieter . I will get my son to Re film it with plug inserted and compare .

Rog,
Let us know as soon as you've completed testing on this - I want one! After watching the video, the difference between the two is marked - the chain slaps around like no one's business compared to the belt.
It has always been my contention that the chain and tensioner arrangement is the major source of the grinding vibration - it may not be the root cause but it would seem it amplifies it! A belt has much, much better shock-mitigation properties along with what seems to be much more stable tension - perhaps with this conversion an RE can be absolutely vibration-free.
I reckon you'll get enough interest here to make a run of them too, which should get the price down.
Fantastic work!

I added the belt drive to the bike I use , I took about 3 hours plus 1/2 a hour to refill all the fluids . So far so good it runs as expected allot quieter with none of those chain rattles , I will add a You tube link of the running engine before and after. Need some longer road tests and then I will inspect the belt .

Very interesting. Looking forward to the road tests.
I have some off-board RE5 friends looking at these as well. One query that has come up is if the rubber tensioner wheel should be changed to something with a flat surface rather than the W shape of the original (and is it an issue in any case ?).

Road test the morning over 100 miles with no problems except for the rain
Before and after (it's hard to hear due to the exhaust noise but the overall engine noise is totally different. it has a rotary buzz instead of a rattle):
Will test on motorway next dry day and post the results.

I've experienced similar conversion to old British iron & it sure makes a noticeable improvement
Great idea

Excellent comparison. What a difference the way gear noises transmit out thru the case.
You are dedicated to make a run out in rain just to post a video for us.

I just came across this thread and was trying to watch the video, but was informed by Youtube that the video was unavailable. Any new news on how the belt conversion is holding up? I have 4 engines with primary chains so spares aren't an issue in that area for me, but the belt conversion still looks interesting.
